Writing feels like magic sometimes

In the last chapter of Taproot Part II, I wrote a scene where Shepard and Garrus are skipping stones on the lake. It’s implied that she’s the one who taught him how, and in the present she’s giving him pointers to make the stone skip farther. Being competitive, of course, he blows her out of the water. She tries to best him, but her physical pain gets the better of her, though she doesn’t tell him that. The scene is meant to underscore the disparity that has formed between the two characters up to this point, and how their roles on the galactic stage will reverse.

Now I’m writing an interlude before Part III that depicts a defining time in Shepard’s childhood. Basically events that are the nexus of her present attitudes and beliefs. There’s a scene where she’s playing in woods with a couple of friends, skipping stones on the creek. She decides (for a few reasons) to finally reveal her biotic capabilities. Her demonstration goes horribly wrong, one of them gets hurt, and they reject her.

I hadn’t planned the skipping stones in the interlude, but I now that I've written it I am loving the mirroring effect. My story's beginning and end are connected, or come full circle, so having the two ends of the middle also mirror one another feels incredibly satisfying.

Posting dumb stuff on Tumblr taught me more about writing yet again. You can use the same metaphor and just change the words and get totally different people. What is that magic? Like there's a huge difference between-

"He follows us across all realms. There is a most unspeakable phenomenon in goldfish, where its feces travels behind it- yes. Much like that."

and

"So the goldfish shit finally decided to come to the party."
