I have three Closet Scenario fics going.
I lost a lot of blood today (papercuts). Time to write more grimmons vampire au.
For the 'how I write characters' meme: Simmons
Pick a character I’ve written and I will explain the top ~three to five ideas/concepts/etc I keep in mind while writing that character that I believe are essential to accurately depicting them.Let’s do three:Spiraling anxiety. Easiest to write that mode where something happens and Simmons reacts. Thoughts snapping around hitting the walls like a pinball. Need for attention and validation. Everyone has it. The majority of the other Blood Gulchers do too: Church, Sarge, Tucker, Donut... But the way their characters are, they demand it. Simmons asks for it and is constantly rejected. Possessiveness. These all sound like negative qualities, but I find them endearing in Simmons. He may hate Grif a lot of the time, and hate Donut a lot of the time, and hate Lopez a lot of the time, but they’re his. They’re his team. Whenever an outsider comes around in the early years Simmons gets very territorial. I think that’s a big thing for him. And a theme I see in Red Team in general. Their cohesion and belonging are very important. Outsiders are to be told to fuck off. Simmons has a hard time letting go of that, but Blue Team becomes an outer ring in their circle to him eventually. Enough that he’s comfortable enough to take field trips over there. “Bye Sarge, I’m going to have dinner at the Blues and check out their chore wheel. See you in a few days!”
Camp NanoWriMo Update I’m officially 3012 words into the Vampire AU fic. I’m starting to become fond of it. I remember this phase, where the writing is really fun. Hopefully it lasts a while. The goal is 10k by the end of April, though from the outline, this is gonna be a lot longer than that. Other goals are to wrap up Nos and get a couple more chapters of Honey Whiskey up by the end of this month. If I keep having good writing days like this, it could happen!
Do you have any rvb head canon refs or a compiled description or your rvb head canons?
(2) hi, there face canon anon again. I’m just asking cause I would like to do fanart for your fics. I know some writers and artists ref other artists facecanons, or if you have maybe consistent features you would like to see? I just don’t want to make it with stuff that’s not what you envision if that makes sense? Sorry to bother you. I don’t want to stress.Hey anon! No bother, dude! I actually hadn’t answered yet because I completely misunderstood the question and was trying to make an rvb headcanon (the text ones) masterpost to publish. For facecanons, I don’t have anything firm, and I don’t have too many physical descriptions in my fics I don’t think? I am highly influenced by what’s out here, so my physical appearance headcanons are sort of a Frankenstein monster of what all our awesome fanartists have come up with. I picture Simmons tall and Wash with dark circles and Grif with thick hair, whether long or short. Grif calls himself handsome twice, so I think he and Donut are the lookers on Red Team. Definite headcanon Grif is native Hawaiian. And that he and Kai are plus size, though how big varies. Street clothes are probably the softest, most worn t shirts possible and jeans.Simmons I like with glasses and without. I think his hair is usually well trimmed, but it’s long enough to get messed up. He probably relaxes with being completely neat all the time as the series goes on. I can see him being a string bean, but I think at the beginning of the series he tried very hard at soldiering, so he was probably physically fit. Torn between geeky t-shirts and collared shirts.Wash, I picture as tired and guzzling coffee all the time. I’m charmed by him being a little gray at the temples. I like the fade and the blonde and he’s definitely physically fit with a real soldier build. Always dresses properly and appropriately. Presses his slacks.Tucker’s black. I picture him medium to dark skin. Brown eyes. I’m still really unsure on the hair. I like short hair, I think. Less maintenance. But there’s so much good art with Tucker with long dreads everywhere, and Tucker would make time to take care of it. I also saw a singer at a club a couple weeks ago who was compact but strong, a great dancer, and had a smile like a light beam. He wore a structured jacket over a t-shirt, ripped jeans, hightops, and had his dreads tied back under a ball cap. So much charisma. So that’s made me consider both interpretations again. I hope that helps! XD I would love anything you came up with. Wow. <3
Carolina
Carolina is a tricky one to get right because number one, no matter what “it” is, she doesn’t want to talk about it. Ever. She keeps most of what she’s thinking to herself and she doesn’t care to share her emotions, either. (This makes her conversation with Epsilon where she admits she doesn’t want to lose ‘another family’ very notable, by the way.)
I think most people when talking about Carolina would talk about her tendency to be an overachiever, and how she always wants to do better, even when she’s already the best. I think people miss how much she pressures herself to get it right though--she doesn’t just want to lead the team, she wants to do it correctly, and she goes to a lot of effort to be the example she thinks everyone around her needs. She doesn’t always succeed in this, especially after Tex comes along, and I think she beats herself up even more when she realizes she’s sinking to being catty about it (this is largely headcanon but I think she hated it when people were catty about her abilities and didn’t enjoy fostering that kind of environment).
Obviously, after the season 10 finale Carolina undergoes a lot of change in how she relates to the events of her life, but one thing I feel I ought to emphasize about this is she didn’t suddenly become a more compassionate person than she had been before. It’s most obvious in how she tries to get the Director not to pursue CT after her defection, but Carolina had always felt a certain sense of responsibility for sparing pain from those she didn’t feel deserved it.
The thing I feel like people are most likely to miss is Carolina’s sense of humor. She’s a total dork. She likes puns and wordplay, especially, and is completely unabashed about participating in tossing barbs back and forth.
I have an ambitious amount to write in April, but I just double-checked and I wrote almost 7000 words in the past five days. Maybe writing for Bingo, Rare Pair Week, Camp NanoWrimo, and finishing Nos and Honey Whiskey is possible. I’m a little shocked. I guess I was saving it up from the whole lot of nothing I did most of the last month.
I wrote something and forgot about helmets AGAIN. Fjsjdjsbf
