original stories & characters [3/?]: France & the House of Valois, from Garden of Devices.
Garden of Devices is a fictional retelling of History during the 1450s to 1520s. It follows the steps of seven royal and aristocratic ruling families in various European monarchies and duchies. Among those families and dynasties is the House of Valois which has ruled the kingdom of France since 1328. The story focuses on the three siblings closest to the throne, especially after the death of their father Jacques Ier and their unofficial decision to share the power. François de Valois, duke of Anjou, is the official heir to the throne and crowned king of France. He is often in conflict with his brother Charles, duke of Berry, intelligent military strategist cursed with a quick temper. Both are followed by their sister, Victoire of Valois, embodiment of austerity and master schemer. In 1504, Charles is killed during the war against the kingdom of Naples. King François follows soon after his brother, leaving no direct heir to the throne. The crown is passed to his nephew, son of Charles, aged six at the time. Victoire assures the regency until 1512, year during which her nephew is crowned king, marking the beginning of the golden age known as the reign of Philippe VII of France.
