Below the Sky
The cars whiz by me as I sit on our fence by the side of the highway, staring off into the field. The wind moving the young corn like green-leafed water. My canteen ran dry about a half an hour ago, but I’m too lazy to walk to the truck and refill it. I can see my dad on the other side of the field, walking through the ocean checking on his babies. He stoops every now and then to get a closer look, his brown hands reaching down to move aside the leaves, or to pluck a weed out from around the base of a stalk. He stands up from one such examination and stretches his back. I look up to the sky and try to guess the time, and then back to my watch to see if I won the game I had invented for myself, I hadn’t. Frank drives up on one of the dirt access roads behind the field and shouts something to my dad, who then motions for me to join them. I start walking at what is by no means a rushed pace. Halfway across the field, I look into the sky again, and see a flock of sparrows darting above me, twisting their group into fantastic shapes. The flock folding over itself, breaking apart and reforming, without ever giving any sign that there are any leaders or followers. A call from my dad in the passenger seat of the truck brings me back to earth. “Back to work,” I sigh to myself, glancing back to the sky as I close the remaining distance to the truck.
