Brexit: What the hell just happened?
If you have been living under rock or don’t live in the UK then you may not have heard but the UK has voted to leave the EU (European Union) with 51.9% (17,410,742) voting to leave and 48.1% (16,141,241) voting to remain. This decision has sent shockwaves through the financial markets through out the world with many of them closing down by around 5%.
It was reported that the FTSE 100 lost £350 billion in only two hours, about 40 years with of EU contributions.
The vote could have wider recuperations with the first minister of Scotland Nicola Sturgeon stating that a second vote on Scottish Independence is “on the table”. Also other nations in the EU are also starting to look at their own membership of the bloc. With nations such as France, Austria, Hungary and Croatia having a large number of Eurosceptics, with around 60% of the French population stating in a poll that if the UK left and a similar vote takes place in France then they would also vote to leave the EU as well.
The prospect of not only Britain leaving but also others following Britain out the door, the EU hierarchy are meeting to discuss how they can prevent a domino affect happening and how they can appease the people in France and other member nations who are getting increasingly fed up with the way the EU is intruding into their everyday lives and seemingly having unlimited power to create any law or piece of regulation that they wish. This is one of parts of the EU that is being blamed for the UK’s decision to leave.
However the vote to leave the EU may not stand as it has to be passed by the House Of Commons where there is a large number of members who are Pro-EU, around 490 out of 650, who could possibly unite to block the result of the vote becoming law and therefore making the vote invalid and could even call for a new vote to take place. There is currently a petition calling on the Government to call for a new vote with rules that state if either Remain or Leave win with less then 60% of the vote or if there is a turnout of less then 75% of the electorate then the vote would not stand. This petition has currently got over 2.2 million signatures in just over 24 hours.
I am positive there will be more on this story in the coming days. Feel free to send in your opinions on this matter whether you are a citizen of the UK, EU or not I would like to hear what you have to say. Please send them to [email protected].
What is the White Rose News Network?
The White Rose News Network is a news network that has been set up with one goal in mind: to give young people a unbiased news source and also give them an opportunity to get into the media.
The reason that the network is called the White Rose News Network is because it has been created in Yorkshire by a proud resident of God’s own county.
The WRNN is currently only me but over time I hope that is grows into something much bigger with people from all around the world contributing to the WRNN by writing stories about their areas and highlighting issues close to their hearts.
At first we will only be focusing on issues/stories in and around the UK, mainly England and Yorkshire. But like I said in the paragraph above in the future we hope to report on stories in Europe and then around the world.
I hope that you understand and bear with me at the start as I will undoubtedly make mistakes both with stories and also with my grammar.
I hope you will like the WRNN and get involved with it as much as possible. Please get in touch me about stories you would like to be featured. Also if you have any photos/videos that you would to be featured on the WRNN. You will be given credit for any stories, photos and/or videos that you send in that are featured. The email address to send them in is [email protected].
