#wtf dumbledore?

So, in the year of the Chamber of Secrets... when Dumbledore cancelled exams as a ‘school treat’...

Did the fifth and seventh year students just...not get to take their O.W.L.s and N.E.W.T.s? What happened to their futures? Someone tell me how a headmaster can just arbitrarily cancel Government-Standard tests as a celebration?

I started rereading Sorcerer's Stone this morning, which I haven't done in a very long time. A few things occurred to me:

1. The sudden realization that, given that Lily and James were 21 when they died, Vernon and Petunia Durlsey are in their early/mid-twenties in that opening chapter. This messed me up.

2. Leaving Harry with the Dursleys was a stupid plan. This we know. Leaving an baby alone on the doorstep of a house in the middle of the night and not so much as knocking on the door to let people know a baby was there? A baby who was nearly murdered earlier that night, just left...unattended, out in the open, for literal hours? WTF, Dumbledore? (And McGonagall? And Hagrid? WHY IS NO ONE ATTENDING THIS CHILD??)

3. When Dumbledore and McGonagall are leaving, he says "I shall see you soon, I expect." To which she should have replied, "No shit, Albus. We work at the same school and it's currently the middle of the semester."

4. Names that meant nothing in the first read through suddenly make me giggle. 'Sup, Figgy?
