the difference between what they’re living in this scene is so big and so heart-aching for some reason. she just got defeated by a rookie, while he is finally standing at the same level as the person he’s liked for 7 years, he is finally standing next to her after 7 long years. and i can’t even begin to imagine how his heart must be beating so fast from excitement and maybe aching a little just from the sight of her so close to him; while hers must be beating from disappointment and bitterness.

and right then the song went “if you could see it with my eyes”  and my heart went AAAHH

let me start of by saying that i came to this drama for li xian (our leading man); i had come across him while doing some research on another drama piece and had been intrigued enough so as to want to see him in a leading role. i had not seen anything with yang zi (our leading lady) at this point and it wasn’t until this drama that i found out she had been deng (allen) lun’s leading lady in ashes of love - a highly successful and adored romantic pairing, about whose commotion i had heard about. 

so long story short i came for li xian but stayed for both han shang yan (li xian), tong nian (yang zi), their love story, but also for all those other characters complementing the main otp/their story. as you can probably guess from the drama poster alone, this is a sweet one, it’s also a funny one (oh do be forewarned and brace yourself for some heavy doses of second hand embarrassment), but it’s also a drama that at its core is about friendship, forgiveness, forging a new path but doing so together (both old & new generations) and never giving up even when everyone thinks you should/must. Thus, gifting the drama with a duality, multiple factors -aside from just a “love story”- that keep you anchored to it. aside from the tags described above, something else to distinguish go go squid for is that chemistry between leads. i mean their sweetness nearly made me go out and get myself a relationship, but i doubt it would’ve been as good and would’ve been lacking han shang yan / li xian -i mean just look at him! if he had me intrigued before, now he has me in his pocket. furthermore, along the same scope of chemistry or romance, another perk to the drama is that there are no secondary (evil) relationship intruders, male or female. Thus many of the common tropes that various other dramas have because of such characters are avoided which after constantly seeing them, personally, makes a nice (evident) difference. 

finally, because nothing is perfect there are some things that made me scratch my pretty little head in confusion. one was our main lead’s (tong nian’s) lack of pursuit or efforts if you will, to preserve her own self, her own identity. it is my opinion that she left that aside in pursuit and accommodation of our han shang yan. something for which she had everything in her favor so as to avoid… a genius in her own right, economically empowered, even physically beautiful -things which some of our other female leads “lack” and are only obtainable or brought about through the male lead. Therefore in my opinion making it easier to lose themselves. I would like to point out that the writers do seem to want to broach this -given some of the dialogue- but I don’t know if it ever is “righted.” second was the amount of pro-chinese propaganda oozing from the lips of our characters. at one point i reckoned i should be cheering for chinese national teams next time i watch international sports competitions. all in all, what i mean to bring attention to is that i’ve seen countless of c-dramas and this is the first one that has caught my eye in terms of the amount of pro-nationalist sentiment(s) being pushed.

HSY: *sees Xiao Bai* *leans onto crossed arms while smirking at XB* Little Bai. XB: *without looking up* I don’t have money anymore. HSY: Why are you being like this? Are we brothers or not? *XB looks at him semi-pouting*

XB: Even if you were my biological father, I don’t have any money to lend to you. HSY: *looks away in frustration before turning back* I’m asking you not for this. Go to Jiadong University and drive my car back. XB: Why did you park your car there? HSY: Oh yeah. Bring some cash.

HSY: *smiles while patting XB’s shoulder* Help me fill up gas. *XB stares at HSY in disbelief before looking away in resignation* Hurry and go. XB leaves.
