Dugongs are real life mermaids 😍🌊💙 @sealifesydneyaquarium #dugongs #wuru #sobeautiful (at Sea Life Sydney Aquarium)
dugong appreciation post we recently visited the sealife aquarium in sydney which is home to two dugongs, pig and wuru. as you can see they are beautiful. pig and wuru were both found injured in the wild and unfortunately attempts to release them back into the ocean were unsuccessful. they are the only pair of dugongs on display in the world. wuru and pig eat many kilograms of cos lettuce every day. apparently it is nutritionally very similar to, but much more environmentally sustainable to grow, than the sea grass dugongs eat in the wild. trays of cos lettuce are dropped into their tank every 15 minutes. they eat so much of it because that is all they eat. dugongs are thought to be the animal from which stories of mermaids first began. after all we can imagine that drunk, lonely and often ill sailors would see their soft curvy dugong bodies and think of attractive women with tails. if you are ever in sydney I recommend visiting pig and wuru as they really are beautiful creatures and the aquarium does a great job working to improve many aspects of the ocean's environmental health.
