Sometimes I have to remind myself
Sometimes I have to remind myself I’m still a kid. I’ll admit, I get carried away with my interest in medicine quite often. I forget that I’m not a doctor now, nor am I going to be one for another 10 years. But somehow I put so much pressure on myself to have all the qualities of a great doctor. The fact is, though, there’s a reason there are no kids in the medical profession.
My A&P class doesn’t even come close to requiring some of the things I teach myself. I research illnesses, procedures, treatments and symptoms that I really have no business knowing about. Why? Because I’m interested.
Now that may come off as obnoxious to some, but I’m just pursuing my passions.
However, I do constantly have to remind myself to chill the frick frack out.
Sometimes I forget that it’s ok if I don’t have all the bones and veins and arteries memorized. I have so much time to learn all of them.
Sometimes I get worked up because I’m an awful standardized test taker, but I’ve got time to practice and get better at that.
Sometimes I worry that I’m not good enough at making decisions to be a doctor. But I’m not 18 yet. I don’t think a single kid my age is an expert decision maker
I worry about my social skills on a regular basis. I’m your typical awkward high school kid, and it’s very hard for me to make friends. I can’t talk to people my own age. I’m great with kids and adults, but teenagers?
It takes me a moment to remember I have plenty of time to develop those skills.
I’m imperfect. Of course I am. I would make an awful doctor right now, any kid would. Doogie Howser is not real life. But some day, if I work hard and live to reach my full potential, I’ll be a great one. I’ve got time.
