This Day in TMHFN History: 1 Nov 2014 - Rainbow Direction WWA tour teaser video
When Kat, Li and Ellis first sat together in January/February of 2014 to discuss their ideas to make LGBTQIA+ fans more visible, one of the reasons was that Ellis had earlier suggested to TMHFN that what LGBTQ+ fans REALLy needed, was to SEE how much support there was for them.
“What if we could get fans to record themselves showing LGBTQ+ support and then we could edit that together into a video and make that go viral?!”
It was a great idea, but we wondered how to get people to participate.
Evidently, when a few months later we came up with the idea of encouraging fans to bring rainbows to all Where We Are concerts, we immediately realized the potential of a video collecting the pictures of all this rainbow support. Besides covering the entire WWA tour map, that video therefore became the “other” big goal we had in mind for Rainbow Direction from the start.
You can imagine how pleased we were when Ellis announced this teaser video, which was published on November 1st, 2014. It’s a beautiful collection of all the self-crafted rainbow accessories, shirts, and signs, as well as some of the merch we had produced and sold for charity. It would take until February 2015 for Ellis to finish the monster job she had set herself, and finally be able to publish the full version with all the rainbow people and flags, but it was so worth it.
Both of these are documents from another time: when all of this was new, and very much DIY. Heartwarming and amazing. Enjoy!
