The only good part about watching the 2007 World Cup semifinals vs Brazil is when they cut to Hope on the bench and you can just see how idiotic she thinks Greg Ryan is.

Sort of new to the fandom... what happened with greg ryan that hes so hated ?

Several reasons. He was a shitty coach. He was an asshole in general. He fed into a lot of the toxicity that was happening on the team in 2005-2007.

The biggest and most publicized reason is that he benched Hope Solo in the semifinals of the 2007 WC against Brazil. He started Briana Scurry, who went in cold after getting maybe 3 caps that whole year! Hope was on a winning streak and he benched her. We lost 4-0. It was the worst defeat in USWNT history. Ryan was fired a month later.

Hope gave her infamous interview after that game where she said: “It was the wrong decision, and I think anybody that knows anything about the game knows that. There’s no doubt in my mind I would have made those saves.”

Many of the vets on the team were outraged at her for ‘breaking ranks’ and violating ‘the code’ where you always stick up for your teammates to outsiders. Note, this team was still comprised of many ‘99ers and only a few younger players who were stuck in the shadow of the legacy of the ‘99ers.

Hope details all of it in her book. She was immediately suspended from the team, completely ostracized, and Greg Ryan banned her from even attending the 3rd place match they played. Also, apparently there was an incident later where Ryan berated her for what she said in the interview and her attitude in general, and when she tried to leave, he shoved her back down in her chair and said “you leave when I fucking tell you to leave.” He denies that happened (of course).

Shitty coach. Asshole human being. It was the dark years for the USWNT.

USWNT 4 Day Challenge: A match you never want to see again

Just thinking about this game makes me nauseous. Greg Ryan is a name that has become synonymous with the 2007 Women's World Cup Semi-Final in which he made the decision to bench Hope Solo, who was on a three game shut out streak, and put in veteran Brianna Scurry who hadn't played in the tournament at all. USWNT lost that match 4-0 and Hope Solo delivered her first nationally syndicated rant.  Solo was rightfully so upset with Greg Ryan and directed her comments towards him but the entire team took offense and socially shunned Hope.  I personally agreed with everything she said but I can understand why SCURRY took offense.  I personally believe the players felt insecure about the decision even though they weren't as vocal as Hope was.  The way they played that game as a whole reflected that.  Even the first goal scored for Brazil was a result of an error on the US team's defensive side.  The ball was headed in Brazil's goal by a US player.  Just writing about this breaks my hear but here it is...
