“ And I was about to say you should be in bed young man! ” Her voice had nothing scolding, instead she simply offered her son to come sit NEXT to her with a smile. Elisabeth had been writing letters the whole evening, replies to the letters from her siblings, her mother, far too many as that she would have been able to answer them all this morning. But she was nearly done and after that she might be able to help her son with his troubles. The woman was surprised the boy had found her at all, considering his room was not that close to her own, at least not as close as she had always WISHED it to be, but once again it had been her mother in law who had won these arguments.
“ I will finish writing this letter and then I could tell you a good night story? I am sure that will help you to fall asleep, it is quite late and you have to get up early tomorrow. ” As always, the crown prince was not allowed to take a single day off and get some rest, no people always expected nothing but the BEST of him and Elisabeth herself knew how difficult this was. She hadn’t been born into this, instead forced to bend to these rules at the age of 15, through a marriage she hadn’t understood until it had been too late for her to turn back.
He had said the truth. For quite some time Rudolf had laid in his bed sleeplessly. Yes, tomorrow a new exhausting day would await him, but the boy had yearned to spend time with one special person. So eventually he’d got up, finding the way to her room with the certainty of a sleepwalker.
As soon as he laid eyes on his mother and saw her welcoming smile, the great tension he had felt while sneaking through the Hofburg disappeared. Quickly the prince went to take the place beside her, leaning against her and curiously observing the many letters on the table. It appeared so much more work than his own correspondence, as he mostly wrote to his parents in their absense. Though now his mother was right here, radiating the familiar warmth he’d missed so much. She travelled around more and more and her visits here had become infrequent. Therefore moments like these were even more precious to Rudolf. Sleep could wait.
“I would love that, Mama!” A rare smile appeared on the prince’s lips. “I promise I’ll be good and rest afterwards.” His gaze wandered to the letters again. “Who are you writing to?”
