i know the underutilization anyone but Sans is a fandom-wide thing and we could talk all day about why that is, but X!Chara is right there guys.
This kid is literally attached to Cross, body and soul. That's a perfect set up for interesting dynamics! Examining the nature of teamwork and autonomy, forced bonding experiences, exploring unhealthy and traumatic attachments- you could found family the fuck out of these two if you wanted, either in a healing arc or a toxic sibling way, and that's not even talking about the other bad-Sanses would react to seeing this kid who wears the face of their tormentors. Would they project their issues with their various humans on X!Chara? Could they learn to care about X!Chara, despite it? How would this kid who doesn't really know them respond to that kind of treatment? And on X!Chara being a child... isn't it strange that X!Chara is visually a kid for a majority of his screentime despite living long enough to be an adult? Doesn't that feel, on some level, like a visual metaphor? In the first few episodes of Underverse, X!Chara talks a lot about how nice it must feel for Classic to be safe, and says he wants to experience that one last time. Even if it's just to get close and steal Classic's soul, that doesn't feel like a lie. In the antivoid with Cross, he's genuinely excited about remaking X!Tale- just look at that giddy grin! He goes on about how he never gave up, never stopped hoping for a way out, and it makes sense. X!Chara is visually average Frisk-Chara fanon age, about 8-12, and he acts it- impulsive, hopeful, stubborn, and simplistic in his mindset. He comes up with a grand plan to remake X!Tale and the first thing Cross says is "Hey, dipshit, how the fuck are we going to get there?" at which point X!Chara just blinks because he straight up forgot they couldn't leave like a little kid excited to get ice cream forgetting he can't drive to the store and buy it himself. He's been alive so long, for so many timelines, but he's still a 10 year old boy, and despite not being touched on much by the fandom or Underverse itself, that feels very important. Imagine you're 10, incredibly sheltered. You love your family, even if the adults talk over you about things you don't understand. And then something horrible happens. You lose everything. Someone you trusted betrays you, and the people around you are hurt. You're hurt by someone you looked up to, and you can't do anything about it because you're 10. You're small, and terrified, and suddenly you're stuck. Time passes, you get bigger, but you never stop feeling 10. You still feel small and stupid, like the adults are talking over you, never telling you anything important because they don't think you're mature enough- and maybe they're right. You made the decision to trust someone who lied, so why should you be allowed to make your own choices? You still feel helpless, angry, and scared. You want your parents to help, but you’re an “adult” now so you have to do it yourself even if no one trusts you to, but you can’t. You’re just 10. But you still try, because what else can you do? And then there's Cross- the last person left. You're 10 and you just lost your mom at the store. It's big, loud, and scary. You don't know where you are. You can't find her, all because you decided to be stupid and wander off. But then, you run into your old babysitter, and everything's okay! You trust them, they can call her for you, they still have her number, right? You’re safe and it’ll all be okay as long as you keep holding their hand. Wait, why are they leaving? Why are they- you want your mom, they were supposed to help you find her, why are they leaving you here again? What did you do wrong? What's wrong with them?! Didn't they say they were going to take care of you? Didn't they promise- you don't want to be alone! You don't want to be lost- where are you going, Cross? We were supposed to be in this together! You were supposed to help me go home, you promised you'd help me go home- don't you want to go home too?
You're 10 and you want to go home. Why can't you just go home?
TL;DR - X!Chara and the concept of childhood trauma are underutilized in this fandom. In this essay, I will-
