Imagine Being One of Cybertron's Only Decent Senators...
(Author's note: Have been thinking about this one for a while because I couldn't find other fics with Senator!Reader who is actually good toward people. Supposed to be set in the IDW universe and might also get connected to one of my other fics. )
Warnings: living in the caste system, the entire senate being corrupt, reader not liking Proteus, mentions of assassination attempts on reader, and mentions of the Decepticon uprising.
-You were a senator of a small region on Cybertron. It had a small population and was not known to be the richest region. From the outside view, it was considered rather insignificant and thus drew little attention from the Senate or the other cities. Honestly, you liked it that way.
-Less attention meant less trouble for you and your citizens.
-One of your region’s few advantages was its natural source of material that could be used to treat cosmic rust and other related ailments. Due to other regions’ neglected work safety regulations, such illnesses had become common, and the steady demand for cures allowed a flow of income that helped you provide for your people.
-You wished you could sell the material more fairly, since other regions priced the cure out of reach for those who needed it. Unfortunately, the current system made that impossible, so you worked around it by producing the medicine locally, keeping it affordable in your own region for your citizens and those who came seeking for it.
-In the Senate, you were considered the oddest senator. While you did not openly oppose the caste system, you did not enforce its laws in your region. And even when crimes occurred, punishments were measured to the offense, not to one’s function.
-Personally, you despised the caste system. You did not believe a Cybertronian's worth should be measured by their alt-mode or function. If it were up to you, you would tear it down and allow it to be forgotten in history.
-But, unfortunately, due to the corruption that reeked from every corner in the Senate, you had to play compliant. If you were to be terminated from your position, your citizens' safety and well-being would most likely be put into jeopardy.
-When it comes to the other senators, they do not hesitate to take things that could amplify their power and status in the system.
-And after working so hard to make your region safe for your citizens, you could not afford to lose your position in the Senate. You could say that you were their shield from the corruption that tainted every other corner in Cybertron.
-You attended the meetings when they were mandatory, but most of the time, you found some excuse or claimed you had other important matters to attend to. You disliked most of your fellow senators, especially Proteus.
-You found him, and his views on the people of Cybertron repulsive.
-Shockwave was perhaps the only senator whose company you enjoyed. Unlike the others, he showed decency and did not share the caste system’s rotten ideals.
-Most of the time, you remained in your home district, managing local affairs and interacting with your citizens from time to time.
- You actually enjoyed speaking with them, learning about their days, and checking on workplaces to ensure safety standards were met.
- This also allowed you to hear and address issues that might have gotten buried under the mountain of datapads in your office.
-The Senate saw this as you being soft or sentimental. Because why would a respectable member of society such as yourself interact with bots lower than you?
-Your citizens, however, adored you for it.
-Despite the limited resources, you worked hard to ensure your citizens had jobs, affordable essentials, and that the taxes were fair enough to support the public needs.
-You directed funds into housing, infrastructure, mining equipment, and research projects. You even offered loans to help workers start businesses, which in turn supported your region’s economy.
-Despite your region’s small reputation, it was one of the least corrupt places on Cybetron, with a remarkably low crime rate.
-Even bots from different classes got along well.
-And due to your much more compassionate nature, you were re-elected through honest votes, unlike most senators who relied on manipulation and coercion.
-To your citizens, you were like a friendly neighbor, someone they could greet in the streets and trust with their taxes. And due to the low crime, you could move freely in the streets.
-Sometimes when new people come to your city, they would not even realize you were a senator after talking to you. Despite your wealth, you lived modestly, not dressing yourself in gold or living in high luxury apartments. So, it was easy for newcomers to take you for a regular citizen.
-Though often left alone, you occasionally became the target of schemes after refusing proposals that could strip your region's natural resources dry or transferring your region's workforces to much dangerous environments.
-Despite staying on the caste system, you were quite strict when it came to your people’s well-being. This often drew the ire of more powerful senators.
-This led you to be a target of assassination attempts. You managed to survive them thanks to luck and your own combat skills. Living in such a corrupt system, even you needed to be able to defend yourself when necessary.
-Sometimes, some of your citizens rallied to protect you. Being one of the only decent senators, they were not willing to lose you easily.
-The culprits behind the assassination attempts would not be a secret to you. You were not naive to think one of your fellow senators wouldn't try to have you removed indirectly, especially after refusing one of their proposals.
-However, due to your low influence, the best you could do is to stand unbothered by these attempts.
-And due to you being well-liked by the public, the hitmen were often exposed and caught, ending the threat to your safety.
-When the Decepticon uprising began, you considered remaining neutral since not many rebellions lasted against the Senate. But when they endured the Senate's attempts to silence them, you started to favor them. You believed in letting them be heard and saw the possibility of the caste system being finally put to reconstruction.
-You even aided Senator Shockwave and the enforcer Orion Pax when you heard about the Senate's plot to cause terrible evil to Cybertron's people.
-However, as things progressed and began to look more dire, you are left wondering what the future will hold for you and your citizens.
