Summary: X’s and O’s
Scotty, the original guitarist for the Flaming Dildos players, and the only talented on in the group, is living in New York, and not doing nearly as well as any of the other band members. He eventually marries Alice, who always had a crush on him, but they divorced after a four year marriage. Scotty goes fishing every morning in the East river, he is a janitor, and owns one nice, frequently dry cleaned suit. Scotty has recently reached out to Bennie, his old band friend, who is now a big time record producer thanks to Lou. Scotty goes to visit Bennie at his office; he brings him a large fish he caught that morning. Bennie is very put off and shocked at what has become of his old friend. Scotty wants to ask Bennie what has changed between when they were in the band and now, and why it has to be different. Of course Bennie doesn’t have a good answer. Scotty leaves, giving him the fish. Bennie makes his way back down to the river.
Analysis: Scotty is living proof that life is not fair, out of all the members in the band, he was the most talented and likely to become a rock star, now he is a janitor who has done nothing with his life. He, like every other character has been taken advantage of by time.
Scotty also feels that envy many characters feel, he sees Bennie as having the perfect life, and being truly happy, but the reader knows from previous chapters that, that is far from the truth. Scotty believes that everything is made up of nothing but X’s and O’s, so there is no difference between any living thing. This idea suggests that everyone is entitled to equal opportunity, as suggested in previous chapters, but it is proven in this chapter that time does not treat everyone the same.
Scotty asks an important question, what happened between A and B. A represents the past and B represents the now. In addition the first half of the book is a section entitles A and the final section is entitled B. This chapter provided the explanation that the first part of the book represents the past and the next part will chronicle future events.
