“This might seem rather abrupt,” he says, after he’s nudged a sheet of paper in the valley between mountains of documents on his desk, sliding it towards the kunoichi seated across him. Elbows propped upon the wooden surface, Kakashi regards her above laced fingers, eyes tired but not unkind. Appraising but unimposing. “But I have an offer for you, Uzumaki Karin. What do you think about joining our village as a full-fledged citizen?”
“Leave me here! Go! Hurry! I can handle it.”

Just what do you take me for?
Kakashi hardly gets angry, if ever, but he thinks the heat flaring between his ribs comes close right then. He’s not quite certain at what exactly — that he allowed it to get this bad, or that Sasuke’s right; that the younger man has surpassed him in leaps and bounds and Kakashi without his sharingan isn’t going to make much of a difference anyway. Inadequacy has no place on the battlefield unless it’s doused in crimson, after all.
“You have a wife and a child, Sasuke.” Even battered and bloody, Kakashi still exudes a hidden fire that can sunder lightning; he is hokage, and the look he casts Sasuke is a reminder, a warning. Despite the lack of inflection in his tone, there is no denying the weight of his words. “Suicide or retreat — we do it together, understood?”
How do you expect me to face Sakura and Naruto if I return with only your blood on my hands and no body to account for your existence? I’d rather die here than drown in their grief.

Oh, they made eye contact. Maybe he can look away and pretend --- no, it’s been almost two seconds. The moment to feign ignorance with nonchalance has passed. Kakashi smiles at Anko and the corners of his eyes crinkle.
“Look, if we’re going to make this work,” he murmurs in a low tone that belies his expression, conscious of their surroundings. “You’re going to have to try to look like you dislike me a little less, my darling wife.”

“Do you know,” he says with all due gravity, “how many brats have asked me for recommendation letters this week? Five. That’s more than half my pack, Tenzo. I don’t even summon more than two at a time for baths.”

Naruto sits at the desk with his back to Kakashi as the Hokage paces languidly behind him, imparting important knowledge for his successor to absorb. Not for the first time in the past hour, Kakashi pauses in his discourse to check on the blond.
Asleep. Of course.
Resigned exasperation lends strength to the sigh that escapes him, and the book in Kakashi’s hand closes with a sharp snap, after which he taps the hardcover on Naruto’s head -- nowhere near as much force as Sakura would’ve used, but enough to convey Kakashi’s depleting patience. He dislikes this method of guidance as much as Naruto hates sitting for it, but there are many things they can’t avoid as leader and future leader of Konoha.
“Maa, we’d finish this a lot sooner if you could stay awake for more than ten minutes at a time, you know.”
