Slowly but surely, I am getting through my to-read pile. This one was so highly recommended I pushed it to the top of my to-read pile. Neglecting a few hundred before it, was it worth it? Eh maybe not.
Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros is a romantic fantasy series where young adults are sent to a “war college” where they have to choose a section to study in and then join the ongoing territorial war. Except, not all are given the choice. The two main characters: Violet and Xadan both are not given a choice and are forced into the most violent of the quadrants: The Riders. They ride dragons into battle, if they survive the college.
I liked this book in that it was an easy read. It was entertaining and for the most part the characters are likeable. I can see why it appealed to a lot of people. It had a moving storyline with different and unique settings.
I didn’t like this book for a few reasons. First, it was highly predictable. Literally the only surprise was actually on the very last page of the book, everything else you could see coming. Second, it wasn’t original. It was nearly parallel to Divergent. Tris and Four are identical to Violet and Xadan. It also had similarities to Hunger Games, Harry Potter, and Game of Thrones.
I liked it enough that I will give book two a chance but after the last chapter of the first book I am worried. If she doesn’t come up with a new plot, the storyline will tire and she was contracted for 5 books in this series. Iron Flame launches in November of 2023 and I will review it afterwards.
