Did Xbox One deliver?

Xbox One’s presentation was an odd one. After combing the various forums and sites, I was able to get a good idea of what the gamer’s reaction was to all of this. And in a nutshell…not so hot. Matter of fact, most were outright pissed. Comments like:

“I don’t give a shit about sports. Guess that’s all Microsoft caters to.”

Or how about ;

 “ TV? These idiots lead with TV? I want to play games. I have a remote control to change stuff over to TV.”

It got worse from there. This was the more tame ones (gamer’s are so tactile lol). It was a land slide statement though that gamer’s are far more excited about the up and coming PS4 release after they saw what Xbox One had to offer. So to summarize, here’s what gamer’s were not all too excited about:

Too much emphasis on Sports

Why would gamer’s care about watching TV and Skyping someone.

They just want to play games

To core gamers, it looked like Microsoft was more focused on the family then the hardcore audience.

Very little games actually shown. Just a lot of wireframes and cut scenes.

Many many questions went unanswered (which is what got them in trouble through the social channels):

Will we have to pay for using pre-owned games and how much?

How much will the internet connection cost?

What other micro transactions can we expect?

Will Xbox One be backwards compatible?

Will my Arcade purchases carry over?

And so much more

Needless to say, gamer’s were confused. They didn’t understand why Microsoft was'nt speaking directly to them. They felt that Xbox One was designed for everyone else BUT gamers in mind. I guess we’ll see how this all shakes out at E3

Next-Gen Xbox Reveal Coming Soon

Microsoft has confirmed via Facebook that it will unveil its next-generation Xbox on May 21 at 10 AM PDT.

A Sony rep came out and told the public a couple of weeks ago that the PS4 won't require a constant internet connection; though due to the fiasco regarding Adam Orth (as well as him being fired as of yesterday), it begs to question whether Microsoft will actually go through with it.

I get the feeling Microsoft is way too far along with their console being always connected to the internet to simply back off on it now. Granted, we’re probably still a good 7 months out from launch, but that could also mean undoing years of development based on what might be seen by the suits as purely reactionary internet fanboys (for all we know, Orth’s sarcastic responses might be the prevailing tone over at Microsoft right now).

This is very true, and again, if rumors are to be believed, Microsoft is trying really hard to lock down the Xbox 720 as much as possible in exclusivity contracts. While this could be a benefit for them, it sounds like it is more of the same kind of stuff that made Xbox Live Arcade such a headache to deal with. While Sony and even the notoriously closed-platform Nintendo are out there courting indie developers, Microsoft is actually doing the opposite and shutting down their indie game platform.

That alone is enough to be cautious about, I think. For as sad and awful as the Xbox Indies section typically is, there are a lot of fun games on there that wouldn’t have ever gotten a chance to shine otherwise (Penny Arcade Episode 3 says hi). I actually have a list in the works hoping to highlight some of them.

Microsoft closing that system down means that when we get the next huge Minecraft-esque independent success, it could show up on the Playstation 4, Wii U, and PC, but more than likely not the Xbox 720. And that’s a problem.

Do you plan on getting the PS4 or Xbox 720 when they come out?

One would assume I kind of have to get a next-gen console if I am to continue being employed by TSSZ news. Which is a terrifying prospect to me; I have exactly $0.00 saved up for such a thing. Well, that’s not entirely true, but that $100 I was holding on to for a potential HDD is slowly getting whittled down to nothing. SocialBlade estimates I could be making between $100 and $900 a month from my Youtube channel, so theoretically if I get a partnership set up it won’t be terribly difficult to put some money aside and get one. But that’s a lot of ifs and theories.

As for which one I’ll be getting, it’s looking very much like a Playstation 4 at the moment. Bits and pieces on the Xbox 720/Durango/Loop have leaked out in the last couple of days to suggest Microsoft is moving further away from gaming and wants to turn the Xbox in to a “general purpose living room media device”. It sounds like they want to route everything through the Xbox - existing TV service, music, even internet stuff. Gaming is becoming a secondary concern to them.

That’s not to say it won’t play games - rumors also say its specs are pretty close to the PS4 - just that a lot of the really annoying features of the Xbox 720 make a lot more sense when you consider what kind of non-gaming applications they serve. But, like I said in that blog about Adam Orth’s tweets, there is absolutely no excuse for not having a functional “offline mode”. Not everything requires a constant internet connection, and pretending that it does is absurd.

The real worry is I don’t know if Sony’s actually said whether or not the PS4 will require a constant connection, either. They’ve said it will be able to play used games, but nothing about what happens when you can’t connect to the internet. And with all of the Twitch.tv and Gaikai stuff in there, it’s definitely got some big streaming hooks.

Maybe the only good answer right now is “let’s wait and see”.
