720p on Xbox One Explained
Lots of news comes today, including an explanation from Infinity Ward’s Call of Duty Ghosts executive producer Mark Rubin on his game’s resolution differences for the next gen consoles. Well that’s a mouth full. Mr. Rubin has stated “There’s no maliciousness, there’s no specific reason why one’s 720p, one’s 1080p. That’s just the way the optimization came out to. To keep a smooth frame rate we nee...ded to be 720p on Xbox One. That being said, it is being upscaled to 1080p, so it is outputting 1080p on your TV, and for the most part the game does look really good." Well what do you think? We are definitely curious about the fact that in order to maintain a steady frame rate on the Xbox One they had to lower its resolution, we’d say that is a bit concerning for a upcoming next gen console by any standard. Could the lower speed on the RAM vs the PS4 already be affecting the games? The fact he added that “for the most part the game does look really good at the end” makes us feel a bit like they are saying “It’s not bad. Not great, but not great.” We’ll have to see as more titles announce their resolutions.
Super Important for Real, Average People
In a recent interview with IGN, Sr. Director of Product Management and Planning Albert Penello, spoke in regards to the Xbox One’s lack of TV in many countries. A console that has been mocked as the “TV, TV, TV, TV, TV, Call of Duty” system.
“TV, if you want to continue, would be another criticism. We talk a lot about TV and that's only going to work basically in Japan and the U.S. at launch where you have HDMI-in scenarios, so you'll say 'hey, what if I have a terrestrial over the air?' We won't have a solution for that right away, but we still sell it as part of the vision.” Said Penello in response to why push TV as a major feature if it won’t be able to be used by most countries. “So the basic experience of HDMI-in will be available for anybody that has TV with HDMI-in. I actually think it's an under-appreciated feature. Today, if I want to go between my console and my set top box I still have to pick up another remote and control it... TV is going to be an interesting challenge for us, as we really have to go through each region, each provider, each set of I.P. and build a solution that works.” Basically, only countries and consumers that can use HDMI for cable will be able to use the TV functions of the Xbox One. Seems like something that should have been thought of and made sure to have been dealt with before launch instead of jumping to market with a main feature that’s not available for millions.
IGN asked Penello about his thoughts towards the move towards non traditional cable that many of switched to, such as Netflix, that are giving cable companies a run for their money now and if he thinks it’s worth the effort to set up what seems to be a complicated TV set up for the Xbox One. “Even with the number of cord cutters, live television viewing around the world surpasses cord cutters by a factor of a hundred to one, a thousand to one, so yes, it's still going to be super important for real, average people.”
Did you catch that? “Real, average people,” really? Given that streaming of television online is becoming more and more common as an alternative or even replacement to cable this seems more of an insult to real, average people.
Perhaps this was poor wording, but the negligent attitude shows that Microsoft still isn’t learning from their previous mistakes a few months ago with the Xbox One announcement and the hugely negative press it earned as a result.
In fact this reminds us of the comments Don Mattrick made about the Xbox One’s now former always online requirement, “fortunately we have a product for people who aren’t able to get some form of connectivity, it’s called the Xbox 360” and “I read the blogs, and thought about who’s really the most impacted, there was a person who said ‘hey, I’m on a nuclear sub,’ and I don’t know what it means to be on a nuclear sub but I’ve gotta imagine it’s not easy to get an internet connection.”
Watch how you word your statements Microsoft, you are only going to offend more people and hurt your market share even more.
Countdown!
As our countdown continues be sure to check back regularly for next gen news, videos, images and more!
The first XBOX One commercial has arrived! Without much shock it is a push on NFL/Entertainment over Gaming. The question is will this be enough to entice new buyers? Is fantasy football on a console worth the price tag? Will Microsoft succeed in winning over a new market? Numbers will show us in time.
Xbox One rebrands to Xbox None
Microsoft has said yesterday that they will be making yet another change to the Xbox One’s mandatory features list, it will no longer require use of the Kinect.
During an interview by IGN, Microsoft's Marc Whitten shared the news that the Xbox One will indeed work without Kinect.
“That said, like online, the console will still function if Kinect isn’t plugged in, although you won’t be able to use any feature or experience that explicitly uses the sensor,” he said.
Asked just how “off” the Kinect can be when it is plugged in, Whitten answered totally off.
“You have the ability to completely turn the sensor off in your settings. When in this mode, the sensor is not collecting any information. Any functionality that relies on voice, video, gesture or more won’t work. We still support using it for IR blasting in this mode. You can turn the sensor back on at any time through settings, and if you enter into a required Kinect experience (like Kinect Sports Rivals for instance), you’ll get a message asking if you want to turn the sensor back on in order to continue.”
What does this mean exactly? Well the Kinect will now be optional and saying no I don’t wan’t to use it is ok. Now comes the kicker, note the part where Whitten says “Any functionality that relies on voice, video, gesture or more won’t work.” This means that you don’t HAVE to use connect but they aren’t changing anything else, so if your game or feature requires Kinect to use then you will still end up using the device or you lose the feature.
So all in all Microsoft has now gone back on all the features that make the Xbox One unique and have essentially made it an overpriced, less powerful, oversized PS4. Kudos Microsoft.
I guess the Xbox One is more like the Xbox None.
Sorry Xbox there is nothing that can convince me to buy your Xbox One. nope. sorry.
arguing with my brother about PS4
I'm for, he's against. The kid wants Xbox None! Needless to say, I kicked his ass in our little debate.
