X-CODE Films interviewing Erika (chief of WIWBI), Shinta Ratri (chief of Ikatan Waria Yogyakarta), and Rully Malay (co-founder of Ebenezer Community) at Museum dan Tanah Liat.
(Top left) Mas Katon, street-food-seller near by Sorogenen community's basecamp, was telling us how his hernia operation and his wife's medical needs were helped and assisted by Mami Tata.
(Top right) Mas Taufan is Mbak Ocha's 'personal' taxi-motor driver. As a taxi-motor driver, he hangs out around Adisucipto Airport area. He knew Mbak Ocha ever since they were working in an office where Mbak Ocha was his manager, though, at the time, she was still called Mas Nanang (Mas is a Javanese prefix for a man).
(Middle left) Mami Tata sharing her initial idea on empowering transgender women to do social works not limited to only their ‘kin’ but to all men. “As minorities, it is actually easier for us to move within the social sphere because people recognize us easier. It’s a simple matter of actually being nice,” said Mami Tata.
(Middle center) Neng Tamara sharing her experience in helping a man who had motorcycle accident. Technical details in the state’s bureaucratic health care system were laid out. Personally (Grace’s notes), I think it’s amazing how the makciks use their position as the minority (esp. appearance-wise) to make efficient the layered process in helping the sick.
(Middle right) Mbak Ocha sharing her stories on being street singer as a chosen job (profession) for survival and to slowly save some money to make her own home-business. In terms of street-singing transgender women, the story is typical, but particular in her chosen style of entertaining.
(Bottom left and right) The interview sessions at Sorogenen community's base camp.
Interviews were done by X-Code Films, assisted by Lashita, Grace, Tamara Pertamina, Ocha, Angel and Sean. Photos were taken by Grace and Lashita.
Failed to shoot
X-CODE Films went to Proliman to shoot several interviews with the street sellers and people surrounding the area that Wacan Management & friends are based for street-singing. Apparently, some of the makciks disagree with the idea of shooting them. The shooting was cancelled.
To still cover the story of street-singing makciks, we will be relocation to several other locations within this September. Maguwo cross, Kalasan cross and the Adisutjipto airport cross.
Teaser #1: Jogja Fashion Week 2013
Friendly volleyball match between Ikatan Waria Yogyakarta (IWAYO) and the Apolo team (from Keranggan Village, Ngeposari, Gunungkidul, Wonosari). The match is part of the village's rasulan (annual ritual in order to keep the spirit of the village clean and virtue).
A shuttle bus was prepared by the organizer to bring Yogyakarta-based makciks to the competition site. The shuttle bus departs from Sidomulyo. Many of the makcik friends come as supporters.
This is the seventh year that makcik communities have invited to several villages around Gunungkidul area for either sport or arts and cultural holdings.
