Deep inland in Miabir's Tear, dense wetlands cover large swaths of land. With several layers of canopy, the ground rarely sees direct sunlight, and many plants in these shadowed parts have more purplish-red colors, and sometimes parasitic lifestyles. Bioluminescence, either through magic or chemical means, is common among all walks of life here; plants, animals, fungi...

Didn't plan on doing any art for exoweek (focusing on writing) but I was compelled this morning! I was wishing for spring and thinking about the first flower that pops up to tell me its on the way: my snowdrops. Made me want a Vertumnan equivalent that is the first plant to show up after Glow (Glowdrops?). I've been learning watercolors through botanicals so it seemed like a good chance to practice. I also learned there's a mycoheterotroph (a plant with a ~symbiotic~ relationship with fungi, in which the plant gets all or part of its food from parasitism rather than photosynthesis) on Earth called Pine Drops. So I drew those too. They look pretty similar to what's in the Valley of Vertigo... or purple asparagus... I've only been working with watercolors for a few weeks and I'll blame my low-quality scanner for eating the colors too. Hopefully by next exo-week I'll be better!  Photo cred: Wikipedia

I had just finished horticulture school when I started the game, so you can imagine what jobs I gravitated to in it :D And then in August last year I got overwhelmed by an idea for a story and it hasn't let go of me since, I have thought about it every day and worked on it on most of them, trying to put in as much knowledge and experience from working with plants as I could! And tried to research what I didn't know. The story branches off in Late Dust of Year 16, when a giant fertilizer bag (one of those that can weigh up to 600 kg/1322 lb) puts You in a coma when it falls from a shelf in Geoponics.

The lesson is: take workplace safety seriously, or live with the consequences.

Some examples of Wuvumian flora, found in planet’s terminator zone. A standard riakhou (4”1 or 125 cm) and a standard human (5”6 or 168cm) for size comparison.

Wuvum is tidally locked to its red dwarf host star, Nêf Hàkko (Red Star in Standard Wuvumian, one of languages spoken by riakhou and the closest to an “official” language Wuvum has). There are around 16 recognised riakhou languages if you don’t count the dialects and regional variants. I’ll make a post about the way they communicate later on.

Wuvum is home to the majority of riakhou population although it is not the planet they originally hail from.

Atrumentuphytum Sp. “Glass Green” (The Inkpot Plant)

I have had the great fortune of coming across these plants in the weeks following my crash landing on the surface of Amadeus III. I was most disheartened to find my data gathering tools—personal recording device included— were destroyed upon landing, thankfully the sap of these succulent xenoflora function with great similarity to ink. For obvious reasons I have decided to name these plants Inkpot plants. It only seems fair they be the first species recorded on this planet given they are the sole reason for my current ability to document the life of Amadeus. Below you will find some observations on these plants:

The primary habitat of the Inkpot plant appears to be the silica rich fog deserts in which I landed. Indeed it seems that the seeds and outer shell of these plants are formed from this silica. From my observations the ink-like sap of these plants superheats under unknown conditions(most likely chemical, fueled by sunlight?) allowing additional material to expand the shell and grow the plant. The leading edge of the growth is sharp and gives these plants part of their inkwell shape. Growth appears to occur during the winter when the fog is more prevalent and the sun less intense. I also observed these plants shedding their stems, quills, and trichomes in the weeks leading up to the growing season.

The sap of these plants is highly viscous and carries a scent quite reminiscent of burning tar. Additionally I have witnessed the consumption of this plant by crumblejaw lead to the death of said via rapid dehydration. The tissues of this plant rapid and continuous vomiting leading to extreme dehydration and, being in a desert, death.

Hi all!! This is the first of a series of pieces based on the plants I doodled in class. As you can see I’ve turned this into a what will (hopefully) be a long term spec bio project centered on Algernon Wimblethorp and their documentation of the various flora(and possibly fauna) of Amadeus III. There is additional lore for Ink plants that I’ll probably either add here at a later date or simply make another post about.

Garak’s Suits as Cardassian Xenoorchids (1/?) - S2E5 Cardassians

I like to imagine that all out Garak’s outfits are based on cultivars of Cardassian Edosian Orchids. Here, I’ve tried to adapt the “Watermelon Suit” to an imagined Edosian Orchid.
