I have already talked about this so much that I cannot muster up the energy to rehash it all again. But it is TRULY the pièce de résistance that he claims Gillian “decided very late into the shooting of the season 11 finale” that she was not doing more episodes. BIIIIIIIIITCH PLEEEEAAAAAAASEEEEEE. (This is the part I can’t bear to dive into rehashing or attempting to source. But, it was in October 2017 at NY Comic Con when the press NOTICED Gillian saying she wasn’t doing a Season 12, which caused ME to have the reaction, “This is suddenly news NOW? She’s been saying this for months!” So, yeah. I repeat: bitch please.)

And it is further bullshit that he says he was totally planning for sure this time no really to resolve everything in Season 12. That gets another RESOUNDING “bitch please.” You milked that one dry a long time ago, friend.

I don’t even have a second of all, Mulder; let me just quote from the article.

If it was Carter’s hope that a dynamite season 11 finale would change Anderson’s mind, boy did he swing and miss. 

This guy took CC to school on his bullshitting and I for one am glad. 

This article that is basically a reiteration of the Den of Geek writeup also states it pretty plainly:

1) "I wonder why it’s ok for her character to be pregnant on sex ed, but for Scully it made her upset.." Re this reblog comment, I think it's like comparing apples & oranges. I know many of fans were exasperated somewhat when it was revealed Jean was pregnant but we come with Gillian fandom baggage, fresh off CC's fuck up with S11. So while I was disappointed with the pregnancy reveal in Sex Ed, upon reflection, it's not the same thing. Unlike CC, Laurie Nunn is a considered writer who...

2) actually plans her arcs. Characters&storylines are introduced into the show for a purpose & to explore something. Scully's pregnancy was another way for CC to dangle & take something from her, to use sex as punishment, to manipulate a woman's body. So yes, while we all may have groaned at another G character having a surprise pregnancy, I have more faith in this storyline than anything CC could produce & given the choice of XF12, I'd rather G film Sex Ed or other new projects that value her.

3) In one of the lockdown zooms, G said she has "been reassured in knowing what the trajectory is in terms of said baby. I think Laurie has things completely under control & where the story goes to is exactly where you would hope that it would go for Jean & also her relationship with Otis. So I’m not worried. I was but I’m not. I’m in good hands." I doubt she would feel reassured with a future CC script.   So I don't think it's the cliffhanger element of XF11 that upset G & fans, it's everything.

Anon, I completely agree with almost all your comments. While I am not fully convinced CC used the baby to necessarily punish Scully for having sex, she wasn’t really allowed to just have sex for funsies; it had be for some greater contrived purpose and to drive the plotline. Somehow, Mulder and Scully had to conceive this miracle baby to replace the defective one that wasn’t really Mulder’s anyway (insert eyeroll here) - so how about a couple of one-offs that didn’t mean anything and didn’t officially make them an overt couple?

I do agree that Gillian had no trust whatsoever in the writing of her character and zero respect for how they used Scully’s reproductive abilities as a plot device. It’s demeaning, reductive, unimaginative, and misogynistic. But I also got the sense from her comments that she was extremely disappointed with the pregnancy being left as a cliffhanger. From her post-series comments, I believe she wanted this last season to be an opportunity to close things out. She never minced words about her intent to leave. She never misled CC, DD, or fans about her intentions. So to hold back the pages and drop this bomb on her lap at the last minute must have felt like they were strong-arming her into coming back...as if a fictional pregnancy would somehow further bind her to the show. Unfortunately for Carter, a fictional baby conjured in a paragraph of TV script doesn’t force you to marry the show. Sorry, Chris!

The other thing Carter never understood in the course of the revival was his returning, most loyal audience of TXF. Though I would be curious to see actual demographic analytics, my impression based on many, many years in the fandom is that the majority of the audience is female. However, CC never gave up on targeting the 20-45 male demographic that perhaps originally dominated TXF. Had he started to actually think about who stayed with the show, who kept it alive all these years through fanfic, con attendance, gifs, show analysis, ticket sales to IWTB, etc. perhaps he would have sought advice on how to write stories and characters that women related to.

But that would have been too much trouble, I guess.

They gave Scully another wig for season 11 because Gillian requested it. She said the longer one was impractical and uncomfortable to wear.

I hated them both but that second one was especially heinous. 😖 The wigs were a metaphor for the revival as a whole. The people who made them were the best at what they do and *could* have done so. Much. Better. Instead we got flat, tone deaf wasted potential.

My closing thoughts for tonight:

I was never a fan of the first pregnancy storyline (if there is indeed a second one). I was never allowed to be. First of all, I don’t like babies very much and second of all, I kind of resented that this major feminist character that I idolized so much at 14 was only supposed to be happy if she was a mother…but ASIDE FROM THAT…We were never really allowed to be excited about William– not REALLY. You see, We found out Scully was pregnant right as we lost Mulder for almost a whole season. Scully being pregnant was supposed to keep us all interested while she searched for David Duchovny. Despite him living in LA, a place where coincidentally, the show then shot, it took many episodes to find him and even when she did find him, there was no “Hey, we’re having a baby!” reveal. In fact, we had to put up with little hints and stupid throwaways like “Are you the husband?” until the last 15 seconds of season 8. And then, just as it seems they are going to live happily ever after with their little family, the show is extended through season NINE. Again, WITHOUT Mulder. So the story we are told as fans is that Mulder and William cannot be in the same place, because, I don’t remember (j/k I blocked it out of my mind because fuck season 9) one of them will die or something. So then we are almost forced to decide - do we love William or Mulder more? Full disclosure: I loved Mulder more. So it’s almost like I was hoping for William to go away because I wanted Mulder and Scully to be reunited. So then they finally are and you know what? Scully is SAD. Like, of course Scully is SAD. She is sad in IWTB and most of season 10 and she finally seemed mostly normal again in Season 11 and now there is the possibility that Chris Carter, that egomaniacal asshole, wants to recycle this storyline because women have no purpose unless they are mothers, I guess. And originally, when I heard this possible storyline suggested, I was all NOT TODAY, SATAN…but now, having lived through this whole ordeal…this - they have sex but they’re not “together,” and a kiss is too much to ask for for a couple two decades deep- I have to tell you…I’m so tired. Like, I’m so tired. If Scully wants a baby then just give it to her. Give her a baby and end it with the hope that they get a second chance to be a cute little family off screen and Scully doesn’t have to give this one up and Mulder is an adorable, nerdy dad who creates monster stories to scare his kid and has to say things like “Don’t tell mom I let you have ice cream for dinner.” Like, I hated the idea but now I’ll take it, like dear god just let them be happy.

Well, I know the fandom is in a bad place right now and the last thing i want is to spread more hate and negativity so i will not write this as a normal post and people can ignore me but i need this so much right now:

The amount of love i feel for the x files and for Mulder and Scully is endless. I am not even an old fan and i have watched the original run in one sitting but i don’t even know why this fucking show became so important to me. also, the funny thing is that PLOT WISE I was okay with the whole thing. I never hated parts of the show that much. I actually do know the story has flaws and sometimes Chris Carter was a prick to Scully and women and all of that, but I’ve always understood that the time period was different and also the drama on the x files was always kinda justifiable to me??? all the times Scully got abducted or all of that, i never hated it. I also understood it was science fiction and that it was a damn show about genetics’ experiments. Also the Duane barry/Emily storyline - what was done to scully was horrible and I recognise it might be problematic but that storyline was so poignant and well acted that I loved it. Same goes for the cancer arc. Also, in my mind, many bad things happened to Mulder as well. And while i do think there’s things Carter should have tried to do better, I never really hated him for real???? Like whenever i said i hate Chris Carter i was mostly joking because the storylines made me FEEL things but i never thought he RUINED the show? bare with me. then it came William, and that storyline has flaws too but i loved it as a whole. I loved it on s8 and even on s9. i was actually on board with EVERYTHING and when they made William kinda horrible in s11 that started to ruin my headcanon but i was like okay let’s see where this is going. Because after all William did not grow with Mulder and Scully and while i would have liked for them to find him and for him to be all nice and stuff, i could eventually come to terms with the fact that it’s your family that makes you who you are, not your genetics. So Mulder and Scully are nice people and he was not, not my headcanon but i could understand it in a way. BUT the finale goddamn ruined the whole thing for me to the point that i have been feeling so sad and then mad and now i feel disgust and spite??? because i can’t believe that i have to live in a universe where William is actually the result of RAPE and not the result of Mulder and Scully loving each other??? their miracle?? it disgusts me to the point that i don’t know if i will ever be able to rewatch the show. Up to now i never really understood people when they said a single twist or storyine ruined a whole show for them. i never felt this way before. but the hatred and the sadness i feel right now are so REAL. i only wanted one thing from the show, and it was actually the fact that william was supposed to be mulder’s son. he could have been tall, short, red headed, angry, mean, a killer or an angel and that WOULDNT MEAN ANYTHING to me but the fact that Chris Carter made Scully carry her baby daddy’s brother and her LOVER’s brother makes me so sick to the point where i feel like the show has been compromised forever to me I JUST CANT GET OVER IT

i think what i hated most about the final scene of the xf finale was this weird uncomfortable feeling it gave me that i couldn't put my finger on, now i realise it felt like i was watching the drop of an episode of black mirror (one of the really dark ones) packaged as a happy ending, but my gut was just like "noooppppeeee" bad bad bad

Anyway I hope to get over this horrifying treatment of Scully soon. Because I was ready to say goodbye and I wasn't anticipating being upset about her being pregnant. But I am. I'm horrified for her and angry that she wasn't given a better send off.

I'm just going to go watch the episodes that I loved her in. X Cops, Je Souhaite, Revelations, Beyond the Sea, Detour, Quagmire, Bad Blood, Wetwired, Never Again, Piper Maru, Elegy (there are more, this is just off the top of my head).....all those episodes I've loved her in for a variety of reasons and are so much truer to her character
