Oh shite. After getting telepathically assaulted during the battle between the Rejects and the Chosen at the beginning of this Judgement War storyline, Jean finally regains consciousness while prisoner of the Rejects, but much to the Beast’s surprise, it’s not Jean’s own consciousness that rises to the surface once she wakes up, but instead it’s Madelyne Pryor’s. This was unexpected to say the least, but not surprising, considering the mind meld that took place when Jean finally took down Madelyne at the end of Inferno. This must not persist for very long, because I don’t remember Madelyne being resident in Jean’s head for any great period of time back in the day, but it will be interesting to see how this gets resolved (I hope they resolve it and don’t just forget about it). Spew. I had to double check, but yes, the normally indispensable Paul Smith did indeed draw this questionable issue of X-Factor. In the past, Paul Smith has been one of my favorite artists, with his work on the Asgardian Wars and Uncanny X-Men being some of my favorite X-Men artwork so far. But, I don’t know what’s going on here.

And look at the limp wristed pointing going on in this issue.

This is hardly the firm and authoritative pointing that we’ve grown to know and love from Mr. Smith. Why does this happen sometimes? I was just talking about this with reference to Walt Simonson’s artwork on the Inferno issues of X-Factor. It seems like sometimes, when a talented artist works on an extended run of comics that are part of an ongoing series, instead of focusing on a single issue or two that are part of a special event, their artwork starts to suffer. Perhaps it’s due to being rushed to meet a schedule? Maybe this is why Jim Lee is always 18 months late on every comic book he draws. (X-Factor #46 – Nov 1989)

Ooooo SLIKT. Were they trying to make SLIKT the new SNIKT back in the day? It’s almost as cool, considering that Archangel can slice your entire body clean in half length-wise or width-wise in the matter of a nanosecond if you look at him funny. I wish he would do this more often. And I wish he would actually slice people in half instead of just giving them little flesh wounds on the thigh. (X-Factor #46 – Nov 1989)

Jesus what’s going on with Beast’s face here? He looks like a werewolf… beast. Like, normally he’s just the Beast but then when a full moon rises up or he gets horny he turns into whatever that thing is. And those Joe Biden teeth. Fucking terrifying. And what’s going on with his right hand there. Where is his thumb. This kind of reminds me of when the Beast first turned furry and the comics were written with more of a horror slant to them. That was on purpose though and I don’t think this is. (X-Factor #46 – Nov 1989)
