A close up of Mulder’s tiny bag of SPITZ seeds. I did some Internet research and found that the seeds he ate were a hybrid of David’s and Spitz brands. The bag is a David’s bag with a mocked up SPITZ logo to cover the David’s one. To make this I found a good quality image of a David’s bag and added the SPITZ logo in Photoshop. I forgot to take a picture of the back of the paint, but I Photoshop painted a back and added nutritional information. I cut and glued the bag together and added a couple pieces of dried up clay to the inside to make it seem full. I painted the whole thing with ModPodge to make it look more like a plastic bag.

My X-Files Revival Wishlist

I’ve been working on this post on and off for months, adding things whenever they came to mind. I thought today would be a good time to post it. Here is a list of things that I hope that Chris Carter and crew put on film this summer (ZOMG THAT’S LIKE IN A FEW MONTHS!!!): UPDATE: Marking all the ones I got with an [X].

[X] Deal with the William thing. And do it in a way that does justice to the characters. So much has been taken from Scully, and when not one but two children were given to her only to be taken away again, I felt that crossed some kind of line. Maybe it’s my maternal instinct. But also, I don’t like the way children were treated in general on this show. It’s as if Chris Carter had no idea how human children actually work — that they can, in fact, make interesting characters. And that they’re not just massive inconveniences. I feel like, if he couldn’t deal with the consequences of giving Scully a child, then he shouldn’t have given her one. Anyway…I have no idea how they’re going to do this because Carter really dug himself into a hole on this one. So, you know, good luck with that.

[X - sort of] I want to meet Charles Scully. Something tells me he’s the cool brother. Hopin’ he’s hot, too. I’ve always imagined him as being hot. 

[X] Those deep, meaningful intellectual discourses that we loved so much. Mulder and Scully, standing in a hallway...or a misty parking lot, holding umbrellas...talking about God, ethics, philosophy, literature: “If you could have proof of the existence of God would it change you?” “Only if it had been disproven.” The conversation on the rock. “When Victor Frankenstein asks himself ‘Whence did the principle of life proceed’ and then as a gratifying summit to his toils creates a hideous phantasm of man he prefigures the Postmodern Prometheus.” <--- Seriously, you’d never hear most of the words in that sentence in any other show. “I’m afraid that God is speaking, but that no one’s listening.” “Nothing exists outside of science; only outside what we know of it.”

[X] I want Scully to be. the. skeptic. I mean, it sort of made sense that she fell into the “believer” role towards the end of the original series because Mulder was gone and she was trying to think like him, she felt guilty for having always been so hard on him, blah blah blah. But I didn’t like her in that role. And I do think Carter will bring back the skeptic. In the 2nd movie, we saw her return to something that resembled more of her traditional role. Although she ultimately believed Fr. Joe, she was hard as hell on him, and we saw the return of that internal struggle that made us connect so deeply with her in episodes like “Beyond the Sea" and “Redux II.” That struggle that Gillian plays so well. Scully embodies the journey of a true agnostic, and for a while, I think she represented Chris Carter’s own internal struggle (though eventually I think he became more of a believer). 

And while we’re on the subject, please, please call the Science and Entertainment Exchange or something when you need help with science. Having re-watched the show for the first time since finishing a degree in science, I have a lot less tolerance for the lack of scientific rigor that we saw sometimes (not all times) on the show -- which was, mind you, uniquely clever in every other way. Nothing against Anne Simon (the science advisor for the show’s original run), but she was a microbiologist, and it sometimes didn’t seem like they consulted any other (good) sources when the series dealt with topics outside of that realm. That anthropologist (that’s my area) from “Jersey Devil” said things that real anthropologists would never, ever say. And a medical doctor would never google “stem cell research” (2nd movie). I mean...at least make it look like you tried, lol. Hire me as your researcher. I’m available, I know how to identify a reputable source of scientific information, and I will work for free! Suspension of disbelief was at the core of what made many of the stories work, and The X-Files’ audience, I think, has grown cleverer in the last 13 years.

[X] I don’t want the characters to look too good. In the last few seasons, there were too many “pretty” LA actors, and David in particular drifted far away from the lanky nerd that Scully first fell in love with met in the basement office. He’d come back from LA all tan and buff, and it bugged me. We can’t do anything about his body type, but I dunno…put him in sweatpants or glasses or something once in a while, please? For old time’s sake.

Mulder’s slide shows. I know it’s 2014, but hey, a girl can dream.

[X] Vancouver. VANCOUVER. Grey skies, long shadows, low fog in a dense forest. Dusty hallways punctured by flashlight beams. Wet parking lots. Umbrellas.

[X] Umbrellas.  

Vince Gilligan, if only just once.

Kim Manners. I know they can’t deliver on this one. But nonetheless, it is on my list. He will always be on my list.

David and Chris write a mythology episode or two. This combo was always gold and it didn’t happen enough.

[X] Old opening credits. 100% unchanged. Addendum: I’m actually rethinking this a bit, since seeing some of the fan-made updated intros that have surfaced. This one (edit: for some reason the video got taken down, but thank god somebody made gifs!!) was amazing. This one is not amazing, but I freaking love the idea of starting with a closeup of the Smoking Man lighting up, then blowing smoke as the logo appears amidst the smoke. How fucking cool would that be if it were professionally done?

Brad Follmer Cary Elwes. Because if the whole thing sucks, at least I got to stare into Westley’s eyes again. *dreamy sigh*

[X] Mark Snow. Obviously.

William. I know I already mentioned him, but he’s worth mentioning again. I don’t just want closure to his story and justice for Scully, I want to know William. I want to know who he is, what he’s been doing.

[X] Great directors. We can’t get Kim Manners back, but we can get David Amaan, etc. I want creative filming techniques, and more walk-and-talks. (I love me a good walk-and-talk.) David and Gillian look great in walk-and-talks, and they have the skills for it.

[X] Humor. The X-Files was a funny show. Or perhaps I should say it was humorous. Because it was never belly-laugh funny or slapstick funny. It was the type of funny where you had to be clever enough to catch it -- which was part of the appeal. It was intelligently funny, darkly funny, ironically funny, and sometimes endearingly campy or sweetly cheesy in a way that is unique to scifi. Mulder’s humor was notoriously dry, irreverent, and blink-and-you’ll-miss-it understated. And we didn’t get to see much of it in the second movie. Sure, Mulder had a few quips, but not like old times. ...Which is fine, I get it. It was a dark movie. But bring back the witty banter that Mulder and Scully were so awesome at, and all those odd characters with really unique and talented actors portraying them. We have six episodes to work with, here, and (yay!) multiple writers. Aaaight. Let’s do dis.
