Review: Promare
From Studio Trigger comes their newest animation and their first feature length film! It was pushed as a combination of Kill la Kill and Gurren Lagann, both of which are fantastic shows if you haven’t seen them. They are full of action and awesome fights, which Promare was able to deliver on as well.
As with most Studio Trigger productions, the plot is a little confusing. So many things happen and so many different pieces are put together. We don’t mean that it is necessarily complicated, just a lot. It takes place in a world where certain humans have a mutation to control fire. In this world, terrorist arise who burn everything. It is up to a group of firefighters with large robots to fight them. Obviously more goes along with it, but that is the basis. It was fairly easy to follow along but so much was packed in that it was a little silly. There were definitely enough fights and crazy stuff to satisfy us though. In fact, we got super excited at one point in particular, but don’t worry, we won’t tell. The plot just felt very familiar. We knew what was going to happen because it followed a very similar formula to other Trigger shows. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, it just wasn’t anything unique.
The characters, again, felt very familiar. We had seen the same types before in other Trigger shows. One of the main characters even looked like Kamina from Gurren Lagann. The villians, main characters, even some side characters just felt like reused personalities.
As far as animation goes, most of it was right up there with what we expect from Trigger. However, there were times where it would shift to some weirder version. It would try to be more three dimensional when it wasn’t needed. We definitely would have preferred if they didn’t change anything and just kept it consistent, but it didn’t distract too much from the overall movie.
Don’t get us wrong, Promare was a good movie. It was fun to watch, got us excited, moved our hearts in ways only Trigger can in inspiration. It even took little nods to prior works. However, it just wasn’t anything new or different. They didn’t step up their game or take any risks. If you just want another version of Gurren Lagann, you will love this movie. But if you want something new from Trigger, this isn’t it. Either way, it was fun to watch. Who doesn’t like seeing robots and fire together?
