We know its been a few weeks since this movie came out, but still wanted to throw our opinion into the world. Justice League was the first time we saw some new DC characters and the first time we have gathered them all together. This film saw the team pitted against Steppenwolf, a precursor to later villains to come (cough cough Darkseid). Although this movie did not get the best reviews, there were still a lot of good things about this entry into the DC world.
So lets start with the good stuff. The characters. This was the first time we saw Aquaman, Cyborg and Flash with the team so we were hopeful to see how they would do. We love the Flash TV show so we were unsure about how this one would compare to Grant Gustin’s portrayal. We were pleasantly surprised. Although not the same flash, Ezra was able to make him very humorous yet still focused. They brought back some of the characteristics we loved from the comics and put them into this character. Cyborg was a little bit complicated, especially in dealing with his new powers, but he was a very valuable asset to the team. Although we aren’t fans of constant origin stories, this one seemed necessary to the plot and made it even better. Aquaman was also very impressive for coming in the first time. He was large, in charge and just as stubborn as we had hoped. Obviously we all have different opinions on Ben Affleck’s Batman and Henry Cavill’s Superman, though we love them both. And obviously Gal Gadot makes for a wonderful Wonder Woman. She kills it every single time. The real value of this movie though was the teamwork. It was really interesting to see all of the dynamics between members. Flash was very loose and silly, while Aquaman was firm and unmoving, making their relationship interesting to observe. That part of the film was really well done.
In addition to this, Justice League has some of the coolest scenes we have ever seen. There were some amazing fight scenes and beautiful artwork involved. We got goosebumps near the end and with the introduction of every new hero. This may be a bit of a spoiler, though I’m sure we are all aware this would happen, but when Superman comes back, it is just amazing. We were struck stiff by this scene and our hairs raised on end. It is just so incredible and breath taking. It may be worth it to watch the movie just for that one scene.
Now onto the not so good stuff. The plot. The plot is why we watch a movie. Sure the characters can be good, but the plot makes or breaks the film. And in this case, it just breaks it. The plot is so thin and absolutely predictable. It is cool watching the team come together, but the rest of it never really has enough depth to get the audience involved. It is incredibly straight forward, and honestly a little boring. There were apparently some directorial differences between Joss Whedon (initially), Zack Snyder and Warner Brothers as well. Mr. Whedon wanted a more lighthearted movie, like the Avengers, while Mr. Snyder and WB wanted it to be more serious. Personally, we feel that a lighthearted move would have helped some. We don’t need every film to be the Dark Knight. We don’t want the Smurfs either, but a little bit of humor and lightheartedness would probably help this clogged film.
To make this even worse, the villain does not help at all. Steppenwolf (no, not the band) is very flat. He has one goal and one goal only, to destroy the world. There is no character development for the villain nor really any interesting encounters. We get that big fight near the end as expected, but other than showing off those guns, he really doesn’t have much else going for him. The whole save the world thing is great, but we really wanted more than that. Plus Superman making up 99% of the Justice League kind of defeats the whole point of the movie and makes it feel like even more of a waste.
Overall, not a great entry in the world of DC movies. The characters were great and we are so excited to see what they do with them (Flashpoint hype!!!) but that seemed to be the biggest focus of the movie. They just wanted to catch up to Marvel, but that hurt them even more. The plot and the villain were just not what we expected and were a big letdown. If you enjoy DC then you might want to see this just to see your heroes on the screen. Support the movie in hopes they can actually make a decent film, but don’t go out of your way for it.
