Smol Tricker update from the last few days.

Headlamp surround sanded ready for paint. I have in fact since painted it. And fitted it.

Indicators were a right pain — although we bought a replacement module to support the switchover from halogen to LED, these LEDs are so tiny that they lacked the resistance to trigger even the new system. Had to wire in resistors. I dunno if we bought the clunkiest possible version of em or what, but uuuugh what an ungodly mess of wiring. Ended up squishing it into a piece of PVC pipe and sealing that with bicycle innertube. Cannot yet comment on whether this was a good idea or a true instance of #very bad mechanic.

The headstock bearings were so grim that we decided to check the swingarm bolt as well, and lo: so mank it took a battering to get it out.

I scrubbed it with wire wool and lubed it up and it went back in no problem. Swingarm action much improved.

We greased the linkage and reinstalled the shock, too.

Annoyingly the UFO fender we were waiting on for weeks is just too big, so back to square one there.

But we did get the new Protapers installed, the oil fill plug replaced, the skidplate installed, the oil drain plug drilled and wired, the brake pads installed, the wheels installed, the choke cable adjusted and (as mentioned above) the headstock roller bearings regreased.

So we're getting there bit by bit.

Work on the Tricker has been appallingly difficult for no apparent reason.

Painted the oil filter cover on one side and the starter motor cover plus the two caps for finding TDC on the other.

That was the only straightforward task, and even with that I had to coax the spray can to work. 🤦‍♀️

In no particular order:

New LED indicators required a whole new stem building for each to attain the correct signal gap between them. Took an extra hour.

Bearing spacer wouldn't tap out or pivot or anything to let us remove the wheel bearings. Jim had to make a device (a bolt with a nut on, rammed through with a punch) and we had to rebore the spacers afterwards. Took almost two hours for a twenty minute job.

New front tyre wouldn't go on the bead. Innertube wasn't quite the right size (should have worked but clearly wasn't having it) so we ordered another. It arrived a week later. We holed it during fitting and thus still don't know if it'll even fix the problem.

The bike had a stupid long exhaust pipe that Jim didn't really like. He cut it up to reduce it and discovered it's needlessly complex inside and has required welding.

Headstock bearings were notchy AF. I don't know if this is just how things are maintained in Japan, but there's grease on all the bolts, right. NO GREASE IN THE HEADSTOCK. Fortunately these greased up nicely and it feels miles better now, but c'mon.

Ordered a high fender from Spain. Most of our European orders arrive within a week. It's been three weeks.

Anyway, that aside, Jim didn't like the tiny headlight and had been replacing it. Here's the OG, vaguely visible in the only front-on-ish photo I have of it pre-stripdown:

So much welding. But it does look good!
