The walls were mostly intact, although the plaster had been worn down by the rain until the gray stones beneath were exposed to the elements, and the floor supporting the second story had rotted away. The roof was gone, crumbled into the interior of the house and, by now, turned into soil. A few trees had even rooted there, springing up through the old kitchen and bedroom into a delightful spray of green canopy. The one in the living room was the largest, somehow almost full grown despite the constraints of the ruined house around it. The surrounding trees had encroached on the building too, the forest determined to reclaim the garden patch where Remus and Sirius had once laid on top of each other in a hammock.
It was a place from a different era, a place nature was trying to heal and make new. Author’s note: I wrote this over two years ago, when my illness was in (as it turned out, temporary) recovery mode, and it seemed that the only thing to do was wait and welcome getting slowly better. I’ve got different stuff going on now, but I still spend a lot of time lying in my garden with sunflowers. It is nice to be reminded there are always so many things to love, regardless of how sick I am at any given moment.
Enjoy!
