SAMPLE PARA:
Laurie watched her now ex-roommate take her last box out of the room. She hoped it would be over quickly, like ripping off a Band-Aid, and put an end to the last few uncomfortable weeks. But Laurie wasn’t that lucky, because with her hand on the door, the other girl turned back, scowling. “It’s not your powers I don’t like, Laurie, it’s your attitude. Maybe your new roommate won’t mind attending your endless pity party, but I’m out.” The slamming of the door behind her made Laurie’s ears ring.
Laurie leaned against door the with a sigh and looked around her dorm room. It was so aesthetically wrong now, with one half bare, and the other filled with belongings that now seemed like clutter in contrast. Movie posters and photographs of her mother, Gail, and black cat, Mordred, plastered the wall. . Wrinkled pages torn from notebooks and class handouts were piled haphazardly on her desk, covered with colorful sketches of mythical creatures and chalk dust. Tidying them would only reveal the oil pastel stains underneath, and although she itched to ‘fix’ the empty side of the room, she knew it would soon be someone else’s space—someone new, someone she’d have to try to be friends with, even if she’d probably scare her off in a few weeks.
“It’s not your powers I don’t like … it’s your attitude.” The parting words of her former roommate filled her head. They confused her because for her first roommate the conversation had gone something along the lines of, “It’s not your attitude; it’s your powers.”
When she first came to the Institute, Laurie feared her empathic powers would only make her a pariah, and she would have understood if it turned out to be the case. It wasn’t like she could make bubbles or shapeshift; she had the power to literally control the emotions of those around her. She could make them feel anything she wanted, just like her father, and her mother had always been afraid he’d come back into their life. Perhaps, Laurie had overcompensated with her first roommate by being overly nice, but her secret anxiety about her powers had revealed itself when she unconsciously turned their room into a suffocating storm of doubt and fear. Trying to keep as much space between herself and the second roommate—physically and emotionally—had also backfired.
Laurie let out another sigh; she couldn’t really blame her roommates for wanting out, but it only increased her fear that she would always be in a tug of war between her personality and her powers.
