The Xavier Institute RP

Responding to mutant adversities, Charles Xavier founded a school for them over 30 yrs ago, converting his family’s large New York estate into the Institute. His purpose was to give mutants a safe place to live, learn and grow. Today, he and a handful of recruited staff members strive to maintain his goals. No matter what a student’s eventual pursuits may be, the Xavier Institute does its best to impart as many tools as it can onto its students before they resume a full life outside of the Institute’s walls.

It would have been funny how absolute the 180 was that Josh’s life took starting on that fateful day. It would have been but now here he was, disowned by his so-called loving parents, abandoned by his best friend since first grade, living with people he had antagonized in the past, trying to understand why his *skin was gold and he could heal people with his touch*. Anyone would have to admit that it was a lot to deal with, especially at only 17.

It was impossible to sleep with so much running through his mind so Josh was wandering the halls of the mansion, not really paying much attention to anything.

“Can’t sleep?”

The voice startled him despite the softness of the tone the speaker used and Josh turned quickly to see another person in the hall that had been empty only moments before. He didn’t recognize her - thank god, at least she wasn’t one of the ones him and his group of Reavers had harassed before - so he smiled lightly and shook his head.

“Sure can’t. You either?”

He watched her smile and duck her head with a little giggle that made him wonder what her full laugh would sound like. When she disappeared right in front of his eyes with no warning, however, his mouth ran dry and his palms started to sweat. She had been right there! Closing his eyes, Josh took in a slow deep breath and held it for a few moments before letting it out in a long, quiet huff.

Either he was losing his mind or someone had invisibility powers and was messing with him… or the mansion was haunted. The first and third options were very not good so he focused on the second. It had to have been another student and, as he made his way back to his room, he resolved to find her in the morning.

Ruth really didn’t like supermarkets, but Aunt Eleanor had managed to find a small one and not one of those huge big box stores, it kept the sensory overload from all the thoughts to a minimum and allowed Ruth to function on the task at hand: getting those last dorm room essentials, which according to Aunt Eleanor meant treats and goodies. She was using her white cane and wearing her dark glasses today, sweeping the cane down the aisles behind her aunt, and trying hard not to bump either displays or, heaven forbid someone’s ankles.

Taking up vegetarianism, had been Ruth’s choice since one Sunday her Aunt had made pork chops, and whatever Luca had done to her before his death had caused her unstable retrocognition powers to show her the horrible life and death of the poor pig when she took a bite of the pork chop on her plate, she hadn’t touched any meat since.

Going about the store Aunt Eleanor insisted on fill the cart with Ruth’s favorite treats like Airheads Taffy, Fruit By the Foot, Sour Patch Kids, accorded flavors of fig bars, and then Aunt Eleanor had gone a bit overboard and added a bag of Jolly Ranches, Cracker Jacks and a lot of  Campbell’s canned soup, popcorn and chips; as if she didn’t believe The Xavier Institute had a dining hall. Ruth was sure Aunt Eleanor would have added a case of ramen noodles, after all, weren’t they a college staple, except for that incident with Luca, ramen noodles, and live worms, when she was six.

Ruth had a new debit card, her aunt had put the money in her account, but this was the card’s first test drive. There was a young girl behind the counter, Ruth telepathy told her she was tired, that she’d worked a double shift, that her old Buick LeSabre was temperamental on the best days  and as Ruth’s fingers brushed as the cashier handed her the receipt to sign Ruth’s powers flared sending her visions of the future. The yellow light turning to red–the car not crossing the intersection in time–oncoming traffic–the horrid squeal of ties–whirring of sirens–a dead body in the crunched LeSabre.

Ruth signed her name quickly, the vision over in a second or two, but below the signature, Ruth scrawled: “Call Hannah for a ride home. Blue Buick will stall on 44th Street.” She didn’t give the cashier a chance to question it before she followed Aunt Eleanor out of the store.

The Xavier Institute RP wants to extend condolences and comfort to Stan Lee’s Family.

His passing is being deeply felt by comic book nerds--casual and diehard alike. Without his ingenuity of creating & co-creating a vast number of characters--the X-Men included--many of us would not have these beloved characters, in print or on screen today. 

Thank you, Stan Lee. May your legendary soul rest in paradise.

NEED TO KNOW (ooc) INFORMATION:

Haroun was born in Tangier Morocco and spent a large portion of their childhood in the area being as studious a child as possible. At age 15 they began running high fevers often but showed no other symptoms to accompany them; it would later be discovered that this was the initial manifestation of their mutation. Their parents did all they could to get them to doctors in order to get answers, but none in the area could be found. 

Over the next 2 years, Haroun’s abilities steadily grew more prevalent and undeniable in identifying the symptoms as signs of them being a mutant. Knowing how severe persecution of mutants was in the area, their parents considered sending them to Mutant Bandari, a school for mutants in Kenya. The school is still new, however, and isn’t as established or protected as the original school for mutants: The Xavier Institute. After learning more about the American school, the family set their sights on heading west.

Haroun began attending the school just before turning 18. For nearly 2 years, they were cautiously using their powers, but each time they did, it was accompanied with a level of pain that would grow each time. A self-inflicted injury on their skin began to worry the professors but Haroun insisted on pressing on. Going against Wolverine’s command to stand down, Haroun pushed themself to attempt propulsion but the amount of chemical energy and plasma emitted resulted in severe burns on their body that nearly killed them.

As they recovered in the Infirmary, Dr. Sage worked alongside Forge and Archangel to create a custom aid to Haroun. Following a few modifications from their original design, the 3 professors successfully equipped the young mutant with technology that operated with dual functions--the first being to save their life, while the second allowed them to learn use their mutation without harming themself again. 

IDEA(S) TO DEVELOP/BUILD ON:

Continuing to work through their self-consciousness of being/becoming a cyborg in addition to being a mutant.

Attempting to answer the ‘what next?’ question for themself, while trying to overcome the fear and trauma that manifested in them from their near-death experience.

–statistics and skills–

MUTATION: Generating and emitting plasma and thermo-chemical energy from their skin, granting them jet propulsion abilities. 

ADDITIONAL STRENGTHS: Haroun has always been especially gifted with computers & slightly above average technology. To aid with the use of their mutation, they have bionic equipment that also allows for aerial scanning, navigation, and personal protection. Haroun is also fluent in Arabic, French & English, and knows a little bit of Spanish.

WEAKNESSES: Because their body cannot withstand the mutation on its own, Haroun relies on their bionic installments in order to survive the use of their own mutation. The tech in their body, while helpful, is also capable of being compromised by technopaths, rendering their mutation a danger to themselves until the tech can be fixed.

Dani woke up in a cold sweat, her breathing shaking as she listened to the screams of her roommate. She tried to tell herself that it was a coincidence, that her roommate had to always have had nightmares and her being there had nothing to do with it. That she wasn’t a mutant and that there was some other logical reason behind her migraines, and her nightmares, and the fact that it seemed that someone around her always woke up terrified.

That she wasn’t a mutant.

It was the same thing that she had been telling herself for a year, ever since her grandfather had first brought up the possibility. And yes, she was now at the institute, and yes, she was now surrounded by mutants. But it didn’t stop her from wanting to wake up one morning and be told that someone along the line had made a mistake. That she didn’t belong here and that all of the nightmares that she and everyone else experienced were just a coincidence. But with a sigh, Dani knew that it was time to wake up from the dream that she had created for herself and face reality. Just like she had to do every morning.

Her clock read that it was 2:59 in the morning, and yet Dani knew that she wasn’t going to fall asleep until it was time for her to go to class since it seemed like that was going to keep repeating now. She wasn’t expecting to pass, part of her wondered if it was even worth it to try in school considering that she always missed so much because her brain decided to feel like it was pounding thousands of nails into it at once.

She missed her parents. She missed her grandfather. She missed her tribe. And more than anything, Dani wanted to go home. A pang of homesickness washed over her at the thought, just as she reminded herself that she didn’t even have a home left to go to. Nobody in Colorado wanted her. Her grandfather was gone. She didn’t have anybody.

Well anybody but her parents. But that was just another dream that she had to wake up from. Whether or not that she wanted to, but today she needed them alive. And today Dani was going to choose to believe that they were alive out there somewhere. And that it was just a matter of time until they found her. It was the first comforting thought that Dani had all week, and with a sigh, she started reading one of her textbooks - that was until her head started pounding from the strain and she attempted (and failed) to go back to sleep.

Marie-Ange Colbert was born and raised in Lyons, France to two wealthy workaholics. Although they thought they could juggle parenting and work, the two opted to put work before family, and enrolled Marie-Ange into boarding school. The only meaningful familial relationship Marie-Ange developed was with their grand-mere. Whenever away for school, the young child kept in touch with their grand-mere through letters and phone calls. For their 13th birthday, their grand-mere gifted them with a set of tarot cards that belonged to the elder woman. 

Over the next four years, on vacations and in free time, Marie-Ange learned from their grand-mere and on their own, how to use the cards and steadily, they improved greatly. During theith 17th year, their mutant abilities began to manifest in the way of their precognitive and retrocognitive powers. Unfortunately, they hadn’t much time to talk about these abilities with their grand-mere before the elder woman passed away. Taking their inheritance from their grand-mere, and guilt money from their parents, Marie-Ange moved away at age 18, determined to severe ties from their parents while seeking aid for their developing mutation. Not long after their leave, they were detected on cerebro and approached by Emma Frost and Storm, who soon returned to the Institute in New York with Marie-Ange with them.

IDEA(S) TO DEVELOP/BUILD ON:

Developing meaningful friendships enough to let people in and get to know her beyond surface and small talk interactions. 

Giving attention and real efforts towards learning/training with the weapons and abilities they’re able to channel, materialize & use through the tarot cards.

–statistics and skills–

MUTATION: Precognition & retrocognition for themself and others; animation, materialization & use of 2D objects and skills, specifically on her tarot cards. Some of these include the ability of flight; enhanced speed, strength and durability, and/or a death touch by way of the death card.

ADDITIONAL STRENGTHS: Tied to their mutation, they are a skilled tarot card reader. They are also bilingual, fluent in both French and English.

WEAKNESSES: They don’t know how to control the occurrences of premonitions vs. retrocognition occurring, or when they might have these insights (though the likelihood increases with the use of their tarot cards). Although they can materialize weapons and use abilities from their tarot cards, Marie-Ange has 0 formal training in combat or weapons use.

NEED TO KNOW (ooc) INFORMATION:

Brian was raised by a single mother who, for their entire life, has been loving and supportive of Brian. Even from a young age, while working hard and always possessing a drive to help their mother, Brian also had a strong love for sports and games. Despite this having been the case, it wasn’t until Brian was almost 20 years old that they discovered they were a mutant. Their ability manifested years earlier but went virtually undetected. A casual game of basketball with some friends ended prematurely, however, with friends on opposing and teams began inexplicably running towards and away from one another on the court almost like repelling magnetic forces.

It was then that Brian dwelt upon the situation and how it happened. They knew of mutants and had seen the X-Men and incidents with The Brotherhood on TV before, but knew nothing of someone who could make people run around in disarray. Concerned for her child but still very much a loving and supportive parent, Brian’s mom did what she could to help them find some answers. She defended him against ridicule from neighbors and checked in with her child regularly. Although she had no idea who to reach out to for help, nor did she know of any way to ask the X-Men for help, she and Brian were approached in time by the famed mutant group with the help of cerebro. Professor X, Cyclops and Jean/Phoenix made the trip and after speaking extensively to the Cruz family, escorted Brian on the X-Jet back to the Xavier Institute.

IDEA(S) TO DEVELOP/BUILD ON:

Learning more about their abilities and also adjusting to the school and being entirely surrounded by fellow mutants--the reverse of their life back in Philadelphia.

Putting some focus on what they want to do with their future and what to study while at the school.

MUTATION: Capable of ‘tagging’ living objects, making them repel or attract to other people or things (willing them to run towards or away from someone or something). Brian can tag multiple living things at a time

ADDITIONAL STRENGTHS: Brian is still athletically inclined, and also has a knack for mathematics.

WEAKNESSES: Brian has to make a conscious effort of deciding whether or not the tagged person(s) are running to or away from someone/something. There also has to be physical contact between Brian and the living thing that gets tagged. The time frame at which the effects wear off has varied with no control by Brian.

Xi’an was originally born in and spent her early years in Da Lat, Vietnam along with their twin brother and parents. To say that life there was difficult is an understatement. Amidst the family’s attempt to leave the country in search of a better life in the U.S., Xi’an’s father and twin brother were killed. With no time to grieve, Xi’an and their mother continued to flee. Unfortunately, their voyage was interrupted again with more tragedy when both women were abused and said abuse led to Xian’s mother’s death shortly thereafter. 

Making the remainder of the journey to the U.S. alone, Xi’an escaped their abusers and ended up at a Catholic church in New York, being taken under the care of a priest. The priest fostered Xi’an to the best of his abilities, providing guidance and life skills as much as possible while raising them in the church. Not long after Xi’an reached their teen years, however, faint signs of their mutation began appearing. It mostly went unnoticed by others, including the priest, but as Xi’an grew older and knew nothing of what was happening, the harder it was to ignore. While Xi’an feared persecution from friends made within the church and at school, the priest had been surprisingly kind and determined to find help. Through this, he learned of the X-Men’s school and sought out help from Professor X. Xi’an enrolled in the school at age 15 and has been there ever since.

IDEA(S) TO DEVELOP/BUILD ON:

Making room to heal and grieve all of the past loss in their life.

Making new and lasting friendships/relationships with others

Practicing and exercising their abilities to further grow and strengthen their control.

–statistics and skills–

MUTATION: Limited telepathy & empathy. Psychic possession (mind control, thought/memory alteration, and forcing commands on others to be subdued or confess/divulge information)

ADDITIONAL STRENGTHS: Xi’an is fluent in 3 languages: French, English & Vietnamese. 

WEAKNESSES: Their telepahy & empathy are both short range. The more people Xi’an tries to read telepathically, or take psychic possession of, the less contorl they have and the more fragmented their own mind can become. If their focus is too fragmented, they also run the risk of causing unintentional damage to other’s minds (temporarily incapacitated, mental paralysis, memory blocks)
