Campbelland - "The Perks of Being a Trend."
The first time I ever heard about Emily Fitch's magical piano skills, it was a typical, rainy Thursday morning. London was gray-ish as usual and I had several articles just waiting for me to write them which was good, because I needed to keep my mind busy that day. Everything was, for sure, pretty much boring and my boss, mr. Galbraith, who is sort of depressive (bless him), started rambling about this girl, this successful, wonderful young lady who could play the piano like no other.
He said she could grow flowers inside his emptiness as she played all kinds of sad pieces. Mr. Galbraith was such a fanboy. Believe me, he has a terrible music taste, and it gets worse when his depression gets worse, too. That time, nearly a year ago, I couldn't imagine she would become a trend, but I was already sure the way she played would piss me off simply because Galbraith liked it and, poor him, he's got screwed up ears and a terrible music taste. You can imagine how much it upsets me now that she's pretty famous.
Famous. A pianist. Everyone knows her name since she started doing BBC specials but I don't really get it. It's classic. She plays classic music. What I'd really like to understand is why. Why is Emily Fitch a thing? What I really mean is, no one likes anything but pop music these days. Common people don't usually listen to Bach or Mozart or Vivaldi anymore. Times are a-changin', huh? And it's a shame admitting it as a fan of classic music. But it's true.
Well, actually... If I'm being completely honest here, I admit I would like to think I really don't know why people love her. But I reckon I do. I've heard she's young. A genius, playing the piano like that at age 24, I heard an old lady telling another at the supermarket the other day.. She's also, well, fit. Or people say so. I've never really spent time googling her. What upsets me is that people seem to adore this girl for what she looks like. For her beauty and her youth; but the worst part might be that, as a feminist myself, I don't appreciate Fitch's complete joy for being famous not for her skills yet for her facial - and possibly - body traits.
And, still as a fan of classic music, I'm telling you all: I don't listen to people's music because of their face and I don't approve this sort of behaviour that makes an artist famous because of how pretty they are instead of their abilities. And I certainly don't appreciate the fact she hasn't said a word about any of this. I don't like people that act this way. Doesn't it look like she tries too hard, too much, sometimes? Or, worse, doesn't it look like we all try too much, sometimes? In a world where most of us love - or pretend to love - Beyoncé and Miley Cyrus and Justin Bieber, loving Emily Fitch should feel like a relief. Except it probably doesn't.
Anyway, I can't really tell, can I? I don't love Emily Fitch now, and I surely don't plan on doing so either.
