When I first started using Lindy Hop to travel I had an unforgettable conversation with an Australian lady who had been to a ton of International events. I asked her what her favourite event was and she said Xpress Your Swing. Therefore, this event has been on my list for over 3 years! I've spent a lot of time with a group of people called the "Ninja Crabs" since the Aladdin routine at last years performance ball. Most of the gang have only danced for a year or less and are bloody bold! The moment I heard they were interested in Xpress Your Swing I joined in. It's great going to events not knowing many people and making new friends but it's also great going with close friends. Especially when there is a long journey involved including Ryanair flights and a ton of trains! In addition, we had a lovely lunch in Avignon. I do wish I had more time to do sight seeing in Montpellier (but couldn't due to starting a new job) but visiting this lovely city with some amazing friends was a cool cultural experience. Despite to cold rain; the pool party with this gang was another top highlight as they were all up for dancing by the pool (and in it!) The event itself was top class! Just like Rock that Swing; you can pick and choose your classes rather than doing just one stream. I do like that method as well but I personally prefer variety. Not only did I do a mix of solo and Lindy classes; but also classes in West Coast Swing, Hip Hop vs Swing and Remy's line dance. In fact the Hip Hop vs Swing routine was my highlight of the weekend. This was partially due the the fact I've seen the routine before when Remy performed this with Michael Jagger, Evita, Moe and King Charles (Chicago footwork dancer) at Maytime Messaround 2 years ago. Once the Busta Rhymes song "Breck ya Neck" came on I knew we were in for a treat. I must also mention how grey Skye was during all the solo classes. It was a huge boost to my confidence as solo is something I've been working pretty hard on for a while. I have a lot of practice to do! Each evening had great music (DJ's and live), a brilliant atmosphere and as always; awesome dancing! One thing I particularly liked was when each teacher was asked to select five of their favourite songs and play them during one of the nights. It was interesting seeing their different preferences and what inspires them to move. All DJ's I've listened to are excellent but I reckon this is something that needs to happen more often. Another cool event was the fast swing out competition. If you ever need the ultimate test of endurance this is it. The couples who made the final three looked like they were about to collapse towards the end! Throughout the weekend Remy talked about his philosophy of dance; having an infusion of various forms of dance from swing to hip hop to west coast. I'm totally on board with this and hope it's a trend that spreads. Whether or not Xpress your Swing happens again next year I do hope more camps attempt to mix things up a bit more whilst staying true to their own ethos. A huge thank you to all the teachers, volunteers and organisers. If this event does happen again I will definitely be coming back! Lastly, thanks again to the Ninja Crabs! I look forward to our next event together!
