There are few better ways to get ones Sunday off to rousing, enjoyable, and uplifting way than to listen to any album featuring The Three Sounds, and this one adding in alto sax great Lou Donaldson fits the bill perfectly. I love pianist Gene Harris, the de facto leader of The Three Sounds. He just seems to play with a sense of joy and fun in any piano line he lays down. In Andrew Simpkins and Bill Dowdy he had compatriots who understood they were making music for people to enjoy. In Lou Donaldson they had a horn player who made his music for the same reasons, thus this pairing on Blue Note Records fro 1959. I'm listening to the Audio Wave XRCD24 version and despite it 16/44 restrictions sounds about as close to high res digital as Redbook will ever come. The music just flows, bounces, and wiggles its way into your soul. This is the perfect pick-me-up album after a long day, or the inspiration you may need to get your day off on a positive note. My only regret with this Audio Wave XRCD24 is that there aren't more of this series. For those who think the humble CD is no longer relevant to high quality music listening, I would offer these XRCD24 discs such as the Tina Brooks I’m enjoying tonight. “True Blue” was the only one of four albums Brooks recorded under his own leadership to see the light of day during his life - and sales were less than stirring. Thus Tina was shunted aside by Blue Note owner Alfred Lion in favor of other artists he saw as better investments (to be fair to Alfred, there were other reasons Brooks was simply abandoned by the label - none of them good). But if you listen to this album now, and it’s follow up (numbered, listed on album sleeve but never released) “Back To The Tracks” (also on XRCD24) you’ll hear what everyone at the time missed - Tina could both play and write top quality music. Plus, via this XRCD24, you’ll hear Tina in superb sound. Short of a bit of air and space, I’ll stack this XRCD24 up against many “hi-rez” discs for sonic quality. Don’t sleep on the CD. Lest anyone think that the CD is dead and that streaming is “the” only way to listen to digital today, I would direct your ears to listening to one of Audio Waves XRCD24 Blue Note titles. Of course the music is great. It’s a Blue Note jazz title featuring Horace Parlan on piano, the Turrentine brothers Tommy (on trumpet) and Stanley (on tenor sax) handling the front line duties, and George Tucker on bass with Al Harewood on drums. So musically it’s gonna knock you out. But it’s the sound that is going to grab you by the scruff of your neck, slap you up dude the head, and make your jaw sag. I have high rez discs that don’t sound any better (and in a few cases worse). There is a three dimensionalness to the sound that eludes many digital reproductions today. Each instrument is clear, concise and true to tone. The XRCD24 process is painstakingly difficult, but the results speak for themselves.
