Coby James Rhodes is eighteen years old and a Senior at Greensville High School.
Born in the middle of who knows where, and raised in Ohio, Coby has lived his life with an unanswered question or two. For the first years of it, Coby lived in a home, known there as James, or ‘Jamie’. At six, his adoptive parents - Kimberly and Brian Rhodes - took him home, to his new life as Coby. He was happy there, with parents who loved him and who he loved in return, and they were happy, too, with the child they’d thought they’d never have. It was no secret to Coby growing up that his parents had adopted after a long struggle to conceive, but he was their son, and he never gave any thought to the life, the family, that had given him up before. That was until, when Coby was eleven, his parents announced that they were expecting. The news, though unexpected, had been met with delight - a big brother! He was going to be a big brother! The boys - twins, no less - completed their family, and Coby took his new role in stride. Life was, for the lack of a better word, perfect. It was that way for a long time, or at least, it was a long time before Coby noticed that anything was different. It started gradually, the odd comment here and there, a slip of the tongue, until ‘these are our boys! And this is Coby’ was the norm. He tried not to take it to heart, but months upon months of build up led Coby to question his place, in his family, and in his life. It was then that he opted to look into ‘his origin story’ (as he liked to think of it), at first on his own, and then with the help of his parents. He never shared with them his reasons for looking, for questioning, and they never asked - he wasn’t sure whether or not he’d wanted them to, but it stung nonetheless him when they didn’t. He didn’t find much - in fact, there was very little at all to go on. And so, when his dad was offered a position in the state of North Carolina, Coby had protested. He wanted to stay where he was, in the place he knew, the place where he believed all of his answers would - eventually - be revealed. Still, he’d packed up his things, and relocated with the rest of them, to the town of North Carolina. Enrolling as a senior for the next school year, Coby knows that his studies won’t hold his attention, nor will ‘settling in’ be his top priority. He believes he has more important things to set his mind on, fuelled by - what he considers to be, anyway - his parents’ disregard for his desire to know. What doesn’t occur to him, what has never occurred to him, is that maybe, just maybe, his answers never were in Ohio. And that maybe, just maybe, Greensville isn’t just the town he’s been forced to - that it might be the next step, but that it might also have been the start of his story.
