Hey! I hope you don't mind me messaging, but you strike me as pretty 'in to' Star Wars, and knowledgable about it. I have watched all the movies (soo many times) but now I'm interested in reading the books, and would like a recommendation on which one first (it seems confusing). I'm more of a fan of the chronological side of things, so maybe the earliest in terms of the Star Wars universe, not publication (if the two are different) tysm for your time if you decide to answer! :)

Heya and thanks for your message! Sadly I’m actually a newbie when it comes to Star Wars novels and pretty much in the same boat as you with being overwhelmed with where to start! D:

I’m mainly in love with the movie era and so I started with the movie novelisations (which are great because they’re a familiar place to start, while adding extra bits and expanding on scenes/characters :) the ROTS novelisation by Matthew Stover is particularly awesome and one of my favourite books ever) along with a couple of stand alone novels set between the movies – Dark Lord: The Rise of Darth Vader by James Luceno (set right after ROTS) and Shadows of the Empire by Steve Perry (set between ESB and ROTJ) fill in the gaps and add some nice character development. I’m currently reading the Thrawn Trilogy by Timothy Zahn (set about a year after ROTJ), after lots of recommendations, and it’s really really great.

If you mean chronologically out of the whole expanded universe, I think the novels set in the Old Republic would be the earliest? There’s a handy list of books sorted by timeline on Wookieepedia if that helps! I’m sorry I wasn’t really much help with this… if anyone with more EU experience has any novel recommendations, please let us know!! :D
