Dead man’s fingers (Xylaria polymorpha)

These specimens of dead man’s fingers were so fat and pudgy I didn’t even recognise this common species for what it was at first, and then was uncertain until I got home and researched a little and found that they can in fact be this round - not at all like the long, skeletal fingers I’m used to seeing.
