yet another cool thing i found while watching commercials… except this one's ultra rare!

an obscure adaptation of a brazilian interactive TV show. it aired on GSN in 1999, back when they aired classic game shows, and you can tell this stuck out like a sore thumb against the rest of their lineup.

another relic from the Y2Kble era: MTV allowed users to send in videos to be used in bumpers. "MPEG us," they said.

we've talked about ads that haven't aged well, but what about an entire channel's ethos?

spike (now paramount network) was the "first network for men," so they had manly ads for manly stuff like [checks notes] taco bell… because casual sexism was in, baby!!!

(for legal reasons, that last part was a joke)

i wonder how other countries executed the whole "integrating TV and the web" thing in the late 90s/early 2000s.

in america, cable channel noggin (yes, that noggin) started out as a joint venture between nickelodeon and sesame workshop. it was targeted towards tweens, and promoted a tight integration between the channel and the website, "because we know you go both places."
