my dad is always afraid to read ya? recently he read like.. 2 john corey whaley books and loved them, and then more happy than not, which he also loved, but now he won't read any more?? just bc they're ya??? but maybe women are more accepting of it idk?
This is an interesting point. YA seems to be a very heavily female dominated genre. I’ve been reading a lot of articles lately slamming New Adult for being too trashy because it’s predominantly chick lit and paranormal romance, and that may have a lot to do with the pervasive sexism against women readers and writers… I have definitely noticed male readers of even really well-written YA series are a rarity… Anyone have thoughts about why that is?
ETA: Also, it’s ironic to note, that I’m pretty sure the YA genre was created in order to partially appeal to boys who were less likely to read in the first place...
Talk to me about what you think about YA readers. I have a dissertation to research! :O
