See how I'm sweating?
Do you get it?
my favourite scene in 10dance was when sugiki explained to suzuki why he was a bad leading man for ballroom dancing, specifically the slower waltz compared to the viennese waltz, with his rougher motions, saying suzuki is "dancing the waltz like a bootboy" and a man who dances like that, who dances violently and with too much force and whose movements are too vulgar and rough on the woman he has to lead. the man sugiki is describing in this moment is suzuki and it functions as a perfect entrance for establishing the core differences in their personalities as dancers. sugiki is more refined and uptight whereas suzuki is much freer but more uncouth and neither personality lends itself to what they want to learn from the other, which means they have to yield. at the same time the audience gets reminded of how much the women between these men already have to yield and endure, how much fusako takes on every time she dances with sugiki, and we get several glimpses of how fusako and aki don't have the same tension as sugiki and suzuki, because they seem to be teaching each other from a more similar starting point, neither of them having to yield as much as their dance partners have to each other.
the tension introduced in this scene doesn't only come from that alone though, and it reads with more nuance the longer the story goes on. sugiki mentions how the women dancing classic ballroom experience "pain that is like torture for them" and we learn through fusako how he not only actively inflicted that pain on her, so she'd crest against the shore of his rigid gentleman persona when he danced with her after she broke down, but it is suzuki who was the one to mention to aki that sugiki looks like he's in pain when he's dancing the waltz, specifically while he was actively berating fusako, hurting himself alongside hurting her. it is also that pain that he still carries, while fusako does not, at least not as overtly as him besides what she knows ballroom dancing to be for a woman anyway. a scene that starts with sugiki seemingly only berating suzuki, trying to teach him understanding, ends up being the kick-off point for realising sugiki treats himself as a ballroom dancer as one huge point of torture, experiencing it and inflicting it in equal measure.
I am totally beholden to Aki Tajima’s ‘Yagami Fusako must be so scary and bitchy’ to ‘Fusa-chan is amazing’ journey within two minutes of meeting her. Aki Tajima is down down bad bad for Fusako you cannot change my mind
rewatching 10Dance, and it's so cute how the girls were close enough to call each other Aki-chan and Fusa-chan 🥰🥰🥰
