OPS Curriculum Day at Yahoo!

Friday we hosted high school and middle school teachers from OPS for their annual curriculum day. This was an opportunity for teachers to get out of the classroom and into local businesses where they can find out first hand what their students need to learn if they want to work at Yahoo. Focus areas for the day included Accounting, Marketing, and IT.  What better company then Yahoo Omaha/La Vista to tackle these fields!

Parker Thornburg, Director of Accounting, spoke to OPS teachers regrading ideal job candidate traits and our finance department.

Zach Woodruff, Senior Supervisor at the Yahoo La Vista Data Center, spoke to our tech stack and the specific IT skills that we look for in our job candidates. 

Bre Phelan, Lead Creative Production Manager, lead office tours for OPS teachers. They had the opportunity to learn first-hand about the amazing roles avaliable in Yahoo’s Omaha office.

Yahoo Omaha once again sponsored the Big Omaha conference for 2016. Big Omaha is the biggest event of the year for the Silicon Prairie's startup and tech community. 

The conference achieved three rare feats this year: an almost 50:50 gender balance amongst speakers (rare among tech conferences), strong representation of people of color amongst speakers, and close to zero waste creation, due in part to sponsorships by Yahoo and Human Design, a Boulder, CO design and branding firm. Together, the sponsorships kept the conference’s ecological impact as small as possible.

We were lucky to have a visit to the Omaha office from HR Director Courtney Panik to hold an interactive Q&A session with the Omaha Women in Tech group! The visit was part of our WIT Speaker Series held quarterly in the Omaha office.

She encouraged all women to step outside their comfort zones, stop limiting their options, and to network with like-minded people. She also challenged the audience to look at their careers as a "lattice" instead of a ladder. We should build upon our skills while lifting up other women along the way. Thanks again Courtney for your words of wisdom!

Over the course of 4 days at the FoodBank for the Heartland, Yahoo Omaha volunteered a total of 96.91 hours, packaged 756 pounds of cereal & put together 3,472 bags of food for Children in the Omaha area.

Even though volunteering is not a competition, those that volunteered on Thursday March 10th did an unbelievable job and packaged 49.8 bags of food per hour!!!! (The average is around 30 bags/ hour).

We are so excited to be partnering with Big Omaha again this year. 

Our sponsorship this year will help Big Omaha towards their goal of becoming the first zero waste conference in Nebraska and all attendees will receive an amazing water bottle to keep for years.

We can’t wait for this year’s conference and look forward to seeing everyone there!

Our Chief Revenue Officer, Lisa Utzschneider, visited Yahoo Omaha today! She shared her insights with the entire office and then held a candid Q&A session with our Women in Tech organization! Omaha was honored to host Lisa for this amazing event!
