WHY HAVEN’T I WATCHED THIS YET

Post NYCC 2012 update.

Ah... so for those who weren't aware, this past weekend was New York Comic Con, my annual holiday.

I treat this festival with special regard not only to see charming folk in home spun cos-play or amazing artists panhandling their prints and commissions in a very large alley, but because NYCC has become the one time where I take stock each year. 

I've always aspired to be on a panel, behind the table looking out onto a crowd, and this year I got even closer to that dream, almost able to touch tables via my luck and circumstance. And looking at where my career has come and where I plan to see it going I'm now even hungrier for it than I ever realized. 

Friday after the con, Rhinestone Guerrilla Burlesque (AD'd by a friend of my GF) after a twitter discussion, held a very special production of their Animaniacs inspired Burlesque show "Good Idea, Bad Idea." Featuring the Rob Paulson, voice actor of all our childhoods from the 80s on as Yakko Warner, Pinky, Rapheal, the list is endless. 

For some odd reason, his kind heart took a minute to chat up Jen and I while we were waiting for the show, Jen had been encouraging me to take VO lessons for a while and earlier more in line. She talk this to Rob, and he said, "Well, I am hosting a seminar on sunday." Needless to say, that push became the inspiration, and I got to work with a talented artist responsible for a great portion of my childhood's imagination. 

It was a real eye opener for me, and in the midst of this Dallas Travers 42 day book a job challenge I'm currently undertaking to restart my career, I feel a greater purpose now. After the seminar with Rob, I gave him a picture I drew of him holding Pinky, on it I left a note ending with "...I hope the next time I see you, we'll be working together." His response. "I can't wait to see you again."

Now what does that have to do with the Con? Besides Rob being there, not much, but it's more how I feel. Needless to say, I'm always happier when I'm there, and while I wish it could never end, it's a lot like christmas, once a year, came and went, but always comes back. 

On a materialistic update, I bought lots of shirts from www.WeLovefine.com, not as much art as previous years, a poster from Benard Chang, a sketchbook from Mike Mignola, Clay Mann, Mahmud Asrar, a print from Joe Quinones and Maris Wicks and another from JKF, and a commissioned Caitlin Fairchild from Erica A. Henderson. Check them all out, I also bought Pens and Markers directly from the Copic booth, note for next year T2 and N2's sell out fast. Quickbooks had a sketchbook called fill in the blank, look it up and see why I got that. Ryan Ottley was there but I couldn't buy his artbook as it sold out the day before which made me sad.

Panel wise, I saw Walking Dead (EPIC), Comic Book Men (Delightful), Venture Bros. (A hoot!) and Robot Chicken (Maculy Culkin?)... and somehow managed to miss the Firefly panel (with Nathan Fillion) ((but thats because I'd rather work with him than watch him from the sidelines)) (((JK)))). 

In a nutshell, It was a good con, and I'm looking forward to a great one next year and beyond. Thank you all who helped organize and put it together so a big kid like me can celebrate not really growing all the way up.
