Discovering OSK Revue: Our First Experience with “GOEMON”
As there is still a notable lack of English-language reviews about OSK Revue, we’ve decided to help fill that gap by sharing our impressions, along with some of our own photos.
We’ve been studying the history of Japan’s two major all-female theater companies — OSK and SKD — for many years. Naturally, we were eager to experience a live OSK performance.
On November 19, we finally had that chance. We attended the spectacular production of “GOEMON”, featuring:
Yan Rin as Ishikawa Goemon
Leo Amaki as Toyotomi Hideyoshi
Yu Ichiya as Ishida Mitsunari
Ryo Tsubaki as Saizo
The performance took place at the Kintetsu Art Theater, located on the 8th floor of Abeno Harukas, the tallest building in Osaka.
Upon arrival, we were greeted by a beautifully decorated lobby, complete with large banners and traditional Japanese umbrellas — perfect for taking souvenir photos (which, of course, we did 😊).
The Performance
“GOEMON” tells the story of the legendary outlaw Ishikawa Goemon, often referred to as the Japanese Robin Hood. The production impresses with its dynamic staging, innovative lighting, and refined choreography — in many ways reminiscent of high-end European theatre.
The show features intense sword fights, moving romantic scenes, and powerful musical numbers. One of the most unforgettable moments was the love scene between Goemon and Chacha — deeply expressive and beautifully choreographed. Yan Rin delivers a stunning performance as Goemon, effortlessly blending charisma, elegance, and physical precision. Her ability to convey emotion through movement is exceptional — she’s truly one of the top actresses in Japan today.
Chacha, portrayed by Mihana, is a complex historical figure, and Mihana brought sensitivity and nuance to the role.
Amaki Leo (as Hideyoshi) stood out with her strong vocal performance and expressive acting. With her signature “dark aura,” she made a convincing and compelling antagonist.
Yu Ichiya, in her first major role as Ishida Mitsunari, left a lasting impression. Her mid-show solo was both emotionally rich and vocally powerful. Her striking stage presence and graceful movements show enormous potential — definitely one to watch.
Final Thoughts
Anyone interested in Japanese history, dynamic storytelling, and strong female-led performances will find “GOEMON” a memorable experience. We only regret seeing it once — the show truly deserves multiple viewings.
