‘Good morning Julia,’ Yangyang feels the small girl’s tiny hands shaking him awake, ‘how’d you get in here?’
‘Door,’ she shrugs, like it is the most obvious thing in the world.
Yangyang’s eyes flicker in that direction, seeing the door wide open, ‘yeah, you’re right there.’
‘I’m hungry,’ she complains, ‘can we have breakfast?’
Yangyang gently pulls Julia by the waist onto the bed with him for a cuddle.
‘What are you wanting?’ Yangyang asks, voice raspy while he nuzzles his nose into his daughter’s hair.
‘Pancakes,’ she replies simply, wriggling in his arms, ‘with sugar. And bacon.’
‘Hmm,’ Yangyang hums, trying to picture the state of your kitchen cupboards, ‘I don’t think we have pancake mix, angel.’
‘No pancakes?’
‘None in the kitchen,’ Yangyang thinks for a moment, ‘but how about we wake up mama and go out for pancakes? What do you think about that?’
‘I like it,’ Julia smiles, ‘Can I have my jammies?’
‘You want to go get pancakes in your jammies?’
‘Yeah.’
She’s so cute Yangyang thinks his heart may explode.
‘Perfect. Let’s wake mummy/mommy up now, ok?’
Julia rolls out of Yangyang’s arms and toddles to the other side of the bed, pulling herself up. She lays her tiny hand on your shoulder, shaking you.
‘Huh?’
‘Mama, we’re going for pancakes.’
Your eyes open to see your two year old hovering over you.
‘Really? How exciting,’ you mumble, still half asleep.
You roll your head onto its side, looking at Yangyang, ‘who’s idea was that?’
‘Guilty,’ Yangyang grins cheekily, ‘Juli, you wanna wait for Mama and Dada to get dressed?’
‘Ok.’
She lays there, rambling on to either one of you about banana milkshakes and maple syrup while you and Yangyang pull cleaner sweats on.
Once you’re all ready, Julia races off towards the front door, as fast as her little toddler legs could carry her.
’Time to go baby,’ Yangyang scoops her up in his arms, getting ready to make the short walk down the street.
It’s only a five minute walk or so, but Julia is hungry and antsy, bouncing around in Yangyang’s arms. You trail along behind them, bunching up your hands in sweater paws to keep warm.
It’s still quite early, so the streets are pretty empty, the sun barely up in the sky.
As you approach the entrance, Julia begins squirming, ‘can you let me down please?’
‘Because you asked nicely,’ Yangyang pecks her cheek and sets her down on her feet, and each of you stand on either side of her, holding one hand each.
The hostess recognises the three of you, smiling brightly when she notices Julia.
‘Hiya Julie!’
‘Hi Miss,’ Julia is so cute when she’s shy, it makes Yangyang’s heart seize up.
The three of you sit in a corner booth, settling on the sofa chairs.
‘Are you just wanting your usuals?’ The hostess asks.
‘Jules?’ You double check, just in case the toddler is feeling indecisive.
‘I want them with bacon and syrup… and a milkshake?’
‘What do you say?’ Yangyang gives her a soft but stern look.
‘Please,’ Julia adds.
’So our usuals,’ you laugh, ‘thanks.’
She walks away, and you exchange a glance with Yangyang, ‘it’s probably slightly embarrassing that she knows our orders off by heart.’
Not long later the food arrives, and Yangyang, the forever doting father, cuts up Julia’s pancakes into bitesize pieces for her.
‘Do you need help with your fork Jules?’
‘I’m okay,’ she takes her little child fork, stabbing it into the pancake pieces and shovelling them into her mouth.
‘Tasty?’ You giggle at the syrup smeared all around her mouth.
‘Yeah,’ she answers simply, ‘good.’
Food is quickly devoured in mostly silence, occasionally Yangyang has to wipe around Julia’s mouth.
‘Are you all done?’ You ask her when the small amounts of pancake left stay untouched for a while.
‘All done,’ she echos, eyes drooping shut in food coma.
‘I think maybe it’s time for our morning nap,’ Yangyang mainly directs the statement to you.
‘Me too,’ you hum, ‘you may have to carry her though.’
‘That’s okay,’ Yangyang shuffles out of the booth, gently laying Julia on his chest.
She complains a bit, but eventually falls asleep on his shoulder.
‘I love our mornings,’ you’re back in the morning sun again, admiring your two favourite people in the whole world.
‘Me too,’ Yangyang agrees, leaning down to give you a kiss, ‘although I’m so happy we’ve tired her out. I need a bit of a nap now myself.’
‘My thoughts exactly.’
