Imitation Shark Fin Soup · Southeast Asian Recipes

Imitation shark fin soup, a common street food in Hong Kong and Malaysia, especially in night markets. Easy and fast soup recipe with an authentic taste of the original.

In Yangzi’s Level 4 Pop’n Sweet Cafe story, he brings MC to a fancy Asian restaurant where they still serve Fancy Soup made with shark fin, and Yangzi remembers how he’s heard that the collagen in the soup is good for the skin, supporting how his grandmother would say that shark fin is good for the body.  

Obviously an important ingredient in this dish is shark fin.  However, the shark fin trade and commerce is both controversial and, in many places, illegal.  This article by the Guardian gives a nice overview of the situation, which incorporates history and photographs. 

The most accepted imitation for shark fin is Korean glass noodles!

Keeping the flavor of the original shark fin soup seemed to be the most important quality of the recipe that I found, which requires then a few more additional ingredients than usual to recreate the same consistency.  

Note, however, that this recipe is not vegan-friendly!  It is, though, much friendlier to the sharks.  In place of the health benefits of shark fin soup provides, one could...get more, restful sleep?  That would certainly help your skin and bodily recovery, and it’ll be easier to rest knowing that you didn’t take part in the torture of sharks!
