Paradise Systems Recommends: The Mountain by Rere, published by Yanshu. This new longform comic by the China-based cartoonist was one of the most exciting books of 2022. In it, a group of friends set out on an ill-fated hike. Rere’s dense, chaotic pencil work captures the beauty and harshness of the book’s setting, and the fragmented nature of the story telling feels like sifting through distant memories.
When the book came out, there was some fascinating discussion of it on WeChat, including a roundtable with Pigao, Wang Shuo (Anusman), and Ying Er. If you’re on WeChat, you can find it archived at the Abnormal Comics Research Center (异常漫画研究中心)’s account.
Image description: The cover of the book has a thin metal foil plate attached to it, which is then printed on. The interiors feature wide panels, with lots of densely scribbled foliage. In one panel, there’s a point of view image of a person’s hand opening a can of soda. She looks into the distance as she sips it.
