It is the middle of the night when that regrettable thing is said. (Regrettable things usually are said around then.) What’s worse is that he knows his words are dangerous, and he says them anyway.
But when your best friend is crying, and you are his only real friend, you must say something. Theta shakes with sobbing, as he does far, far too often.
“I-I don’t want to be alone. They won’t ever accept me. You and Brax and Ushas and the others will all go on and I’ll be alone again because I can’t do it and I can’t...I-” The rambling sentence ends with a sob.
The hot tears make Koschei uncomfortable, but he scoots closer anyway. With hesitance and more than a little bit fear, he puts his head in the wild hair strands.
“No, you won’t. No matter where you end up, I’ll be there with you. I’ll come for you, wherever you are.”
Theta curls up against his friend, trying to squeeze as much comfort out of the moment as possible, and timelines curl around the both of them, held in place by the regrettable promise.
