(Gifted) Other Words For Smoke by Sarah Maria Griffin . So I’m back from my unplanned hiatus 😅 Not quite sure what happened, but I became ill right before an exam and after that I had to get better and continue studying for my next exam, so I think it all became a bit too much to add bookstagram into the mix! . Meanwhile, my reading has been great! Among the books I’ve picked up this month are Other Words For Smoke, and I’m only five chapters in but I’m really into it. It’s very strange but you’re hooked instantly! Especially the chapters written in second person are captivating - maybe because I’m not used to it? Anyway, if you’re in the mood for a haunted house book, add this one to your list! Also, @sarahgriffski will be at #YALC again this year, another reason to pick up this book! 🌸 . Book Review: INEVITABLE FATE by Lindsay K. Bandy

This book was a riveting read, and that cover! Bandy masterfully weaves a YA paranormal romance with a real-life historical event and wraps it in a cloak of dark, gothic mystery. Our male protagonist (a refreshing rarity in YA) is Evan, an aspiring artist who uses his vivid dreams of a past life to inspire his stunning painting of a mysterious green-eyed girl. The painting is good enough to land him a spot in the Promising Young Artist program at NYU, where he’ll spend his senior year of high school.

One fateful day he gets caught in a rainstorm and finds himself sharing an umbrella with none other than Mara, the green-eyed girl who’s been haunting his dreams. When Evan finds a picture of himself from 1911, he knows his visions are more than just dreams. The story flashes between present day, Evan's visions, and hundred year-old journal entries from an asylum, and Evan relives Mara’s inevitable death and seems to be helpless to stop history from repeating itself.

This was one of those “strap in and keep your arms and legs in the car” sort of books, with twists and turns and suspenseful climbs leading to devastating drops that take your breath away. Evan and Mara are captivating and compelling characters that had me invested in them throughout every fingernail biting moment of this story. I devoured it in one night and wanted an immediate re-read just to catch anything I might have missed the first time. Pick this one up—you won’t put it down! Five solid stars.
