Yoshi’s Woolly World preview at E3

Yoshi hits E3 with his cutest installment Yoshi’s Woolly World. This title is taking the same artistic appeal as Kirby’s Epic Yarn, but Yoshified and with Shy Guys and all of that cute stuff! 

Like Mario Maker, Yoshi’s Woolly World was also introduced at last year’s E3 with playable levels reminiscent of the classic Yoshi’s Island. The controls are generally the same for traditional Yoshi games: the ability to flutter, pick up yarn (instead of eggs) and be able to shoot them. What’s different from using eggs is that these yarn balls came in different sizes; the smaller size being able to shoot one target, while the bigger sized yarn goes through multiple targets. Now for beginner players, or players not really used to playing the Yoshi franchise, there is a mellow mode in which Yoshi grows a pair of wings that flies, but not forever.

The demo has improved significantly at this year’s E3 with added co-op play and amiibo compatibility like the many recent lineups, both of which greatly augmented the gameplay. Co-op made the game much more sociable and dynamic with interactive elements as the stages encouraged stronger cooperation between the two players. Players could use each other as backup wool eggs for baddies or to unlock items. This game evoked a sense of trust even when playing with complete strangers, unlike in the Legend of Zelda: Tri Force Heroes, a game that only seemed to destroy friendships because of the challenging puzzles.

The biggest added feature in this demo is the amiibo compatibility that allowed players to select any of the previously released amiibo and alter Yoshi’s skin to transform into a yarn-style character. The Yarn Yoshi amiibo added a different feature where it would duplicate Yoshi that mimicked the player’s movements, thus serving as an alternative in the absence of a partner. To my knowledge, co-op does not support this function.

Last but not least, this demo at E3 featured power badges, an option not as openly advertised. It gave fans the chance to utilize Easter eggs and get bonus features such as the ability to summon Poochy, the beloved dog of the Yoshi series. Similarly to how the yarn Yoshi amiibo functioned, Poochy follows you around comes back if he falls off the stage. What’s more special is that you can ride Poochy as Yoshi. It’s almost like Poochy is to Yoshi what Yoshi is to Mario! All jokes aside, other power badges included the option of having an unlimited fire watermelon.
