FINALLY FINISHED MY YARN TAILLLLLL!!!!! :3
Made myself a yarn tail keychain! :3
Couldn't brush it out cuz it's not that kind of yarn and it's the first one I make, I'll buy better yarn soon and do it better again! :3
tail is done (I started over but I really like it now)
I'm gonna be adding charms to it later btw
My advice for making yarn tails:
I don’t care who you are, I don’t care what you can or can’t afford or what is most accessible, do NOT use pet slicker brushes to brush out the yarn for the fur unless you want the brushing to take longer and be more physically laborious.
Pet brushes are designed for animals, so there are backings on the metal bristles that makes it so it won’t scratch your pet’s skin while still removing fur. Because of this, the process of brushing out yarn with slicker brushes is really fucking slow because of that protective backing.
Instead to brush out the yarn to create fur you’re gonna want to use one of these wool brushes used to mix wool colors for needle felting together. The metal bristles don’t have the protective backing on them and they’re specifically designed to separate hair, so using those to brush out the yarn instead is SO much easier and faster. I was genuinely surprised by how fast it was, even with normal sized acrylic yarn, and I actually started to enjoy making my tail more because of that!
I’m saying this because I see a ton people online when making yarn tails using pet brushes, and me, being a beginner, thought that’s all you could use when it’s actually a pain in the ass and my body was sore as hell the first day of brushing out all the fur.
Please, use a brush that’s designed for fabric and not animal fur. Your body and sanity will thank you.
Also here’s the tail I’m working on
I started on my yarn tail yesterday thinking “oh this is gonna go faster than I think maybe a few hours or so” because I thought all of the people in the tutorials were exaggerating.
They were not.
This is probably the most physically demanding project I’ve ever done solely because of all the brushing of the yarn n shit, and I’ve made entire fursuit heads before so it’s not like I haven’t done anything major beyond simple crafts before.
Don’t get me wrong this is fun to do and I love what I got so far but HOLY HELL YOU’RE A TAILL!! BE EASY LIKE ONE!!!
Anyways this is what I got to last night, about 3 or 4 layers of tufts. and yes the base is pink because I wanted it to look like the skin. it’s incredibly soft and fwumpy and the little ringlets from crappy brushing are super cute :3 I’m actually quite confident that the finished tail will look good.
This is what I’m going for btw and I’m using i love this yarn from Hobby Lobby
People who do yarn tails, how do you do patterns, and how to do trim down the tail without any gaps in between the fur tufts showing the braided core. I got this design I wanna do just for fun but I haven’t found anything that teaches you how to do this specific pattern. Thanks!
(For those who can’t tell, it’s kind of like stripes that goes all the way around the tail at a slight diagonal angle and it forms a triangle at the top, but around the tail completely it’s more of a teardrop shape)
I feel incomplete without my tail... but it's still only halfway done 😭 these damn yarn tails take way too longg
those 2 are the exact same material but i cannot for the life of me keep the brown long when i brush it
what do i do :((( my tail is 50% brown
