Back on my Nik jumper now I’ve finally found the yarn I want

I’ve made a couple more edits to the pattern posted on my main blog.

Here’s some update on my progress under the cut:

It’s taken me this long to find a store with cotton yarn that I like. I have sensory issues with acrylic and wool so if I make clothes for myself I’ll spend extra on cotton. I also think it’ll probably work best for the finish I want.

Now I’ve made my final pattern and first square I can measure it and put it onto the pattern for the jumper I’ve made. Although geometry is killing me bc theres a lot of connecting curved lines to straight lines in this pattern.

I’ll post two tutorials for this later. One with a visual and text pattern for the granny square and one for how to use that to the jumper pattern I’m making.

If I had the energy I’d love to make some tutorials for other ways to use the square as patterns. I’m thinking I might make some headbands. And also might make some in purple, green, and yellow for some certain other podcasts.

I'm making another Mort crochet patch but I've photographed the process this time so I can make a far more comprehensive tutorial for my hfth crochet side blog (@yarnery-hooks in case you didn't already know... I was hoping I could think of a better URL before posting anything but I think I might be stuck with this one now),

but now I have another Mort patch that I don't need so he's homeless.

Anyway here's a photo I took of this new Mort on my Laptop by holding the laptop upside down while I held up a cushion for a background in my teeth and fumbled to click the 'take photo' button... aka here's a bad quality photo of new Mort

Hello From the Hallowoods Nikignik Granny Square - full tutorial with photos and text

This pattern uses US terms. I used a light weight (215m/100g) cotton yarn for this project and a 4mm hook, however this can be adapted for whatever yarn would work best for the intended project. The ones I made for this tutorial is intended to become a square in a jumper.

Abbreviations

ch - chain

mc - magic circle

r - round

slst - slip stitch

sc - single crochet

hdc - half double crochet

dc - double crochet

tc - treble crochet

_ inc. - increase (2 crochets into the same stitch)

Materials

4mm Crochet Hook

light weight black yarn

light weight red yarn

Scissors

(may optionally use stitch markers and a needle to weave in ends)

Pattern

(number in square brackets refers to the photo image for the step)

In red wool

R1: [1] mc and ch3 (counts as 1dc) [2] 11 dc into the magic circle. Pull tight and slst into the 3ch of the 1st dc. (12)

R2: [3] ch 3 (counts as 1dc) and 1dc into the same stitch. dc inc. into every stitch. slst into 3ch of 1st dc. (24)

[4] switch to black yarn

R3: Backloop Only [5] ch1 (counts as 1 slst) slst into the next stitch, sc inc, hdc, dc inc, dc, tc inc, dc, dc inc, hdc, sc inc, slst [6] slst, slst, sc inc, hdc, dc inc, dc, tc inc, dc, dc inc, hdc, sc inc, slst. Slst into the 1ch of first slst. (34)

Switch to red yarn

R4: Backloop Only [7] chain 2 (counts as 1 sc) 2 sc, sc inc, 2 sc, sc inc, 1 sc, sc inc, 1 sc, sc inc, 2 sc, sc inc, 3 sc. [8] 3 sc, sc inc, 2 sc, sc inc, 1 sc, sc inc, 1 sc, sc inc, 2 sc, sc inc, 3 sc. slst into 2ch of first sc. (44)

Switch to black yarn

R5: Backloop Only [9] ch2 (counts as sc) sc, 2hdc, dc, tc, ch1, tc, dc, 2hdc, 3sc, 2hdc, dc, tc, ch1, tc, dc, 2hdc, sc. [10] 2 sc, 2 hdc, dc, tc, ch1, tc, dc, 2hdc, 3sc, 2hdc, dc, tc, ch1, tc, dc, 2hdc, sc. slst into 2ch of first sc and fasten off

Weave in ends.

This completes the square. This can be used for any project that can be made with granny squares if the square is measured and the pattern is a adjusted to it's measurements. The square is slightly more rectangular as a consequence of the shape of an eye, so an optional sixth row could be added to even that out if necessary using smaller stitches at the short side and larger stitches across the long sides.

Hfth Mort crocheted clothing patch - full tutorial with photos and text

This pattern uses US terms. The Mort Applique doesn't have to be a clothing patch. You could probably turn it into a brooch or something else as well. (I used yarn I already had for this project so I used chenille for the eyes which was unnecessarily difficult but does have a nice almost fiery result)

Abbreviations

chain - ch

mc - magic circle

r - Row/Round

slst - slip stitch

sc - single crochet

hdc - half double crochet

dc - double crochet

_ inc - two crochets in one stitch

_ dec - regular decrease (you could also do an invisible decrease)

Materials:

Crochet hooks: 4mm and 6mm

Darning needle

sewing needle (and white thread)

A light weight white yarn

A light weight black yarn

A light to medium weight green yarn

A medium weight red yarn

Pins for sewing (optional)

scissors

Skull

(number in square brackets refers to the photo image for the step) I recomend using a tighter tension for this part. this is a 4mm hook

[1] mc and ch 2

R1: [2] 9dc into mc [3] ch5 [4] dc into mc [5] ch 3 [6] dc into mc [7] ch5 [8] tighten ring and slst into second ch of the first ch2

R2: [1] ch and 9sc (one into each dc) [2] 6sc into the gap created by the first ch5 [3] slst into the dc before the ch3 [4] 2dc into the gap created by the ch3 [5] slst into the dc after the ch3 [6] 6sc into the gap created by the second ch5, slst into first ch of round and fasten off (leave a long tail to sew with)

The Eyes

(number in square brackets refers to the photo image for the step) You need to make two of these. I used a light to medium weight chenille with a 4mm hook. The eyes will be much larger than the sockets, this is fine because when you sew them together the eyes will have more dimension. You do not have to use chenille yarn for this.

[1] mc and ch1

R1: [2] 4sc into the ring, tighten ring and slst into first sc. fasten off

Make 2

[3] place the eyes behind the sockets of the skull and sew them with white thread (It's best to start by the nose of the skull and sew down into the hole of the socket rather than across to the next stitch to make your stitches less visible)

The Helmet

(number in square brackets refers to the photo image for the step) Using a light weight black yarn and a 4mm hook. You want to keep your first lines of chains loose because you need to use your 6mm hook in the base of it later.

[1] ch 11

[2] R1: Starting from the second chain from the hook, 1hdc into each chain (10) ch 1 and turn

[3] R2: 10 hdc across (10) ch 1 and turn.

[4] R3: hdc dec, 6 hdc, hdc dec (8) ch 1 and turn

[5] R4: 8 hdc across (8) ch 1 and turn

[6] R5: hdc dec, 4 hdc, hdc dec (6) ch 1 and turn

[7] R6: hdc dec, 2 hdc, hdc dec (4) ch 1 and turn

[8] R7: hdc dec, hdc dec (2) fasten off

The Base

(number in square brackets refers to the photo image for the step) Using a medium weight worsted red wool and a 6mm hook (the thicker wool helps give dimension to the finished piece)

[1] Attach red yarn into bottom corner of the helmet

[2] R1: ch 1, sc into same stitch then 8sc across and sc and slst into last stitch (12) ch 1 and turn

[3] R2: 12 sc across (including into the first ch 1) (12) ch 1 and turn

[4] R3: sc dec, 8sc across, sc dec.

[5] fasten off

[6] embroider black yarn through the centre row

Use the long tail of the skull to sew the skull onto the helmet. then weave in the loose ends.

And it is finished and ready to be sewn on or turned into a brooch.

Hello yes, just found your blog as a crochet and HFTHW fan and omg I am in love! Can I see more of your Mort and Yaretzi??

Thank you! I really wish I could crochet faster to get more of my stuff on here but alas I have joint pain. I made Mort as a gift for my brother and then I made Yaretzi for my brother's boyfriend which is when I thought... what if I made a sideblog for my hfth crochet projects?

If you ever make any of my patterns (There's only Mort and Nik Eye up right now) then please share them with me! I'd be so happy to know people are making these.

Since my family has crochet Mort and Yaretzi right now I can't show many photos of them, I did however post Yaretzi here on my main blog, and I also have what we call Angry Mort, whom I made for the tutorial on this blog and is currently hanging out with my abominable Shank rag doll.

I have three ongoing projects right now. One is a secret for now, the other is making a jumper out of Nikignik eye squares. And finally I hope to figure out a pattern for Yaretzi (since I free-handed her otiginally) and when I get some good yarn for it I'll also make a Polly (which was the original goal. For me, my brother, and my brother in anarchy to all have one of the trio)

The Cat Attack

Nikignik was kidnapped by this cat

This cat is now wanted for the crime of kidnapping the eye of an indescribable being. His address is believed to be... wait a second his address is also my address... I can't share that...

Well if you see this suspect, please do not call the police. He's too cute to be arrested. Instead make sure your feet are as least threatening as possible. If C detects feet which do not belong to myself, he will dart away to the closest rooftop.

The only way to avoid this outcome is to have my feet or no feet. Foot removal is not considered to be worth the cat approval and is thus not a recommended method. The recommended method is instead to own my feet, at which I must ask how you obtained them.

I did my first tutorial with text and images for accessibility and comprehension,

But I didn’t do an audible format. Is there demand for that because I could certainly work on making audio patterns?

I don’t have the most typical accent but I did live in posh England for a year so I could force a posh English accent if my normal voice is too incomprehensible.
